HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Dr.
4 Clinton Bristow, Jr., President of Alcorn State University, on
5 August 19, 2006; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He held a B.A., a J.D., and a Ph.D. degree from
7 Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and an MBA from
8 Governors State University, University Park, Illinois; and
 
9     WHEREAS, Dr. Bristow's administrative experiences included
10 serving as president of the Chicago Board of Education and Dean
11 of the College of Business at Chicago State University; and
 
12     WHEREAS, He was named president of Alcorn State University
13 on August 24, 1995, where he remained committed to increasing
14 the percentage of minority graduate students by doubling their
15 enrollment; he increased the public's awareness of the value
16 and the contributions of land-grant universities; he
17 established a faculty research incentive program to enhance
18 research in the sciences; he established programs that focus on
19 preparing more minority students for success in the STEM
20 disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and
21 mathematics; and he led Alcorn to become a national leader in
22 the production of African-American baccalaureate graduates in
23 the life and agricultural sciences; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Dr. Bristow was active in many organizations and
25 held board memberships on the Board of Directors of the
26 National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant
27 Colleges (NASULGC), the Southern Association of Colleges and
28 Schools (SACS), the National Association for Equal Opportunity
29 in Higher Education (NAFEO), the Capital Financing Board for
30 HBCUs, and the Congressional Award Board; he was also active in
31 the Chicago Bar Association, the Chicago Youth Success

1 Foundation, and the Illinois Committee on Black Concerns in
2 Higher Education; and
 
3     WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr., has been
4 deeply felt by many, especially his life partner, Lezli
5 Baskerville; his daughter, Maya Bristow; his sister, Annie
6 Peoples, and her children, Shameece and James; his brother,
7 David Bristow; his god sister, Mary E. Young; and his many
8 uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it
 
9     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
10 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
11 together with his family, his friends, and the citizens of this
12 State and this great nation, we mourn the passing of Dr.
13 Clinton Bristow, Jr., and we extend to his family our sincerest
14 condolences; and be it further
 
15     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16 presented to his family as an expression of our deepest
17 sympathy.
