HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Margene Pappas, the Director of Bands at Oswego
3 High School, is retiring after 37 years of service in the music
4 education field; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mrs. Pappas, a native of Champaign, received her
6 B.S. and M.S. in Music Education from the University of Arizona
7 and VanderCook College of Music; and
 
8     WHEREAS, She is the Director of Bands in Oswego Community
9 Unit School District 308, where she has taught for 37 years,
10 both at the junior high and high school level; her current
11 teaching responsibilities include directing the OHS Wind
12 Symphony, Chamber Winds, and Concert Band, working with the
13 Marching Band, Pep Band, and Jazz Band, and administering the
14 district band program; membership in the high school band
15 program has grown significantly in the last nine years; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Bands under her direction have performed and
17 consistently received superior ratings at The Midwest Clinic,
18 the Bands of American National Concert Band Festival, the ASBDA
19 National Convention, the IMEA All-State Conference, and the
20 University of Illinois Superstate Band Festival; in addition,
21 the high school bands have earned grand championships and
22 sweepstakes awards from the Outback Bowl Music Festival, the
23 Dixie Classic, and Musicfest Orlando (three times); and
 
24     WHEREAS, Bands under Mrs. Pappas' direction were known to
25 travel; one notable trip is when she took the TNT Band to march
26 in the 1982 World's Fair in Tennessee; recently, she had
27 Oswego's high school bands march in the 2005 Tournament of
28 Roses Parade in Pasadena, California, where they were seen in
29 person by over one million people and on television by over 400
30 million people around the world; and

1     WHEREAS, Mrs. Pappas' professional associations include
2 the NBA (Board of Directors 1994-96 as a middle school
3 representative and 2000-2004 as a high school representative),
4 ASBDA, Phi Beta Mu, MENC, IMEA, and she is on the advisory
5 board for the BOA National Concert Band Festival; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Her honors include the John Philip Sousa
7 Foundation Sudler Legion of Honor Award, the Illinois Chapter
8 Phi Beta Mu Hall of Fame, the NBA Citation of Excellence, the
9 2000 Studs Terkel Humanities Council Award, the Chicago
10 Outstanding Music Educator Award, the Illinois State Board of
11 Education Award of Recognition for "Those Who Excel in
12 Education", and the Illinois Grade School Music Association
13 Cloyd Myers Memorial Award for Excellence in Music Education;
14 and
 
15     WHEREAS, She was recognized by SBO Magazine to represent
16 Illinois in 2002 as one of "50 Band Directors Who Make a
17 Difference"; in 1999, she was featured in THE INSTRUMENTALIST
18 Magazine and was a recipient of the "Mr. Holland's Opus" Award;
19 the Ledger-Sentinel, Oswego's weekly newspaper, selected Mrs.
20 Pappas as one of the 50 most influential people of the century
21 in Oswego; therefore, be it
 
22     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
23 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
24 we congratulate Mrs. Margene Pappas on the occasion of her
25 retirement, and we recognize the incredible impact she has had
26 on the lives of so many students in the Oswego area; and be it
27 further
 
28     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
29 presented to Mrs. Pappas as an expression of our profound
30 esteem and with best wishes for a relaxing retirement.
