HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, In 1976, Kurt Mathiasson, one of the leaders of
3 the Andersonville community and a Swedish immigrant, fulfilled
4 his dream to preserve the Swedish-American heritage in Chicago
5 by opening the Swedish American Museum Center; the first museum
6 was a small storefront log cabin in which family histories were
7 collected; during the U.S. Bicentennial Year, His Majesty Carl
8 XVI Gustaf, King of Sweden, officially opened the Museum in its
9 original location; and
 
10     WHEREAS, The Museum moved to its current location in 1987
11 and underwent a Phase I renovation; the King of Sweden returned
12 to celebrate the new beginning of the Swedish American Museum
13 Center; and
 
14     WHEREAS, The Museum completed its Phase II renovation in
15 1997, adding new gallery space and the donations of the
16 Nordiska Museet exhibit to its permanent collection and
17 display; and
 
18     WHEREAS, A grand staircase to the second floor permanent
19 exhibit was completed in 2000-2001, and the new Children's
20 Museum of Immigration for children ages 3 to 12 opened on the
21 third floor; and
 
22     WHEREAS, The Museum presents four exhibits annually
23 featuring contemporary Swedish art and Swedish arts and crafts
24 and also offers Swedish language and folk dancing classes; and
 
25     WHEREAS, In 2004, the Swedish American Museum Center opened
26 the Nordic Family Research Center, becoming the first American
27 organization to provide online access to Swedish Church records
28 from the 16th to the 20th centuries; and
 
29     WHEREAS, On April 23, 2006, the Swedish American Museum

1 Center celebrated the organization's 30th anniversary year;
2 therefore, be it
 
3     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
4 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
5 we recognize The Swedish American Museum Center for its many
6 contributions to the Swedish American community, and we hereby
7 express our most sincere best wishes as it continues to fulfill
8 its missions; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the Swedish American Museum Center as an
11 expression of our esteem and with best wishes for continued
12 success.
