HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of this Body are happy to recognize
3 citizens of this State who have made outstanding contributions
4 to society; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam is the Chief of the
6 Section of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the University of
7 Chicago; he specializes in the surgical management of heart
8 failure and is an expert in high-risk cardiac surgery; he has
9 performed more than 650 heart transplants and numerous cardiac
10 surgery procedures, including transmyocardial laser
11 revascularization, complex valve reconstruction, and minimally
12 invasive coronary artery bypass graft surgery; and
 
13     WHEREAS, He has a special interest in treating patients
14 traditionally considered inoperable; he has repaired damaged
15 hearts in several patients awaiting transplant, enabling those
16 patients to forgo transplantation; he also has successfully
17 performed transplants involving patients who do not fit the
18 standard criteria for transplant; and
 
19     WHEREAS, He is board certified in cardiac surgery, thoracic
20 surgery, and general surgery; he attended Columbia University
21 School of Medicine for medical school and completed his
22 surgical residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center;
23 his fellowship was in transplantation & cardiothoracic surgery
24 at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center; and
 
25     WHEREAS, He was a John Jay Scholar from 1976 to 1979; is a
26 member of Phi Beta Kappa, and Phi Lambda Upsilon (Chemistry
27 Honor Society); he received the Rudin Achievement Award from
28 1980 to 1984, the NIH Junior Research Award in 1984, the
29 Janeway Prize for Excellence in Medicine in 1984, the Whipple
30 Award for Excellence in Surgery in 1984, and the J. Rudin Award
31 for Achievement in Physiology in 1994; and

1     WHEREAS, Dr. Jeevanandam is a pioneer in the field of
2 mechanical circulatory assist devices; in October 2000, he was
3 the first surgeon in the world to successfully implant the
4 CardioVAD, a revolutionary, permanent circulatory assist
5 device that boosts heart function in patients with severe heart
6 failure who are not candidates for transplant; therefore, be it
 
7     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
8 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9 we recognize and commend Dr. Valluvan Jeevanandam, M.D., for a
10 life and career that has been devoted to helping people, many
11 of whom were thought to be beyond help; and be it further
 
12     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13 presented to him as an expression of our gratitude for the
14 great work that he does in our State.
