HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Fredric
4 Bente Selcke, former Clerk of the House of Representatives, on
5 Saturday, April 1, 2006; and
 
6     WHEREAS, He was born on October 27, 1914, in St. Louis,
7 Missouri, to Rev. Benno H. and Frieda Bente Selcke; he married
8 the former Helen E. Culver of Indian Point on September 19,
9 1942; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Mr. Selcke was educated in the Petersburg public
11 schools and graduated from Northwestern University in Evanston
12 in 1939 with a degree in business administration; and
 
13     WHEREAS, He valiantly served his country as a member of the
14 U.S. Army; he enlisted in 1942 and was discharged as a captain
15 in 1946; he served in the Philippines and was a member of the
16 Veterans of Foreign Wars; he was also a 60-year member of
17 American Legion Post 198 and a lifetime member of Bethlehem
18 Lutheran Church in Petersburg; and
 
19     WHEREAS, Mr. Selcke was active in Republican politics both
20 locally and statewide; he was a precinct committeeman for many
21 years and served as Republican County Chairman of Menard County
22 for eight years; he was elected Menard County Clerk in 1946 and
23 1950; in February of 1953 he was appointed by then Governor
24 William G. Stratton as Superintendent of Registration for the
25 Illinois Department of Registration and Education; and
 
26     WHEREAS, In 1963, Mr. Selcke was elected Chief Clerk of the
27 Illinois House of Representatives and served ten years in that
28 capacity along with two years as Assistant Chief Clerk; in
29 1973, as Chief Clerk, he was elected President of the American
30 Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries; he retired from

1 state service in December of 1976; from 1977 to 1997, he worked
2 as a legislative consultant for several elected officials and
3 business organizations; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The passing of Fred Selcke has been deeply felt by
5 many, especially his wife of 63 years, Helen; his children,
6 Sandra S. (husband, Dr. Patrick) Bernardi and Stephen F. (wife,
7 Katherine) Selcke; his grandchildren, Ellye and Greg Bernardi,
8 and Ben, Dan, and Drew Selcke; his brother, Dr. Benno H.
9 Selcke, Jr.; his sister, Phyllis S. Weaver; his sister-in-law,
10 Harriett C. Shaw; and his nieces, Sally Moreno, Jane Cutright,
11 and Brigitte Tournier; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 we mourn the passing of Fredric Bente Selcke, and we extend our
15 deepest sympathy to his family, friends, and all who knew and
16 loved him; and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to his family as an expression of our sincerest
19 condolences.
