HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, the House of Representatives of the Ninety-Fourth
3 General Assembly has supported measures to help reduce waste
4 and protect Illinois' environment; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Illinois school districts have supported
6 pro-environment education in the classroom and in the school
7 district with goals to encourage students to reduce, reuse, and
8 recycle; and
 
9     WHEREAS, The State of Illinois through the Department of
10 Commerce and Economic Opportunity offers grants to school
11 districts through the Illinois Zero Waste Schools Grant Program
12 to help reduce waste; and
 
13     WHEREAS, According to the U.S. Environmental Protection
14 Agency, in 2003 the United States produced more than 236
15 million tons of solid waste, which amounts to 4.5 pounds per
16 day per American; and
 
17     WHEREAS, According to the U.S. Environmental Protection
18 Agency, in 2003 72 million tons of waste was diverted from
19 disposal due to recycling; and
 
20     WHEREAS, According to the U.S. Environmental Protection
21 Agency, recycling prevents the emission of many greenhouse
22 gases and water pollutants, saves energy, supplies valuable raw
23 materials to industry, creates jobs, stimulates the
24 development of greener technologies, conserves resources for
25 our children's future, and reduces the need for new landfills
26 and combustors; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Recycling helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions
28 that effect global climate; and

1     WHEREAS, The House of Representatives of the State of
2 Illinois encourages recycling in schools cafeterias without
3 requiring a fiscal mandate on school districts; therefore, be
4 it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
7 we urge all Illinois school districts to provide recycling
8 containers in all Illinois public school cafeterias to allow
9 and encourage students to recycling and help reduce waste in
10 Illinois; and be it further
 
11     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this Resolution be
12 presented to the Illinois State Board of Education.
