HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Throughout our history, America has welcomed
3 millions of Irish immigrants to its shores, and those proud
4 people arrived seeking a better life for themselves, their
5 families, and future generations; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Many courageous individuals came during the
7 terrible years of Ireland's Great Famine in the middle of the
8 nineteenth century, and their road to prosperity was not easy;
9 many faced significant obstacles, including discrimination and
10 poverty; despite these challenges, Irish Americans have risen
11 to success in every sector of our society; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Many of the Irish immigrants migrated to Illinois
13 and have played major roles in our State's commerce, industry,
14 arts and sciences, and all levels of public and governmental
15 service; therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
17 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
18 March of 2006 is designated as Irish-American Heritage Month,
19 and all Illinoisans are urged to observe this month by learning
20 about and commemorating the contributions of Irish Americans to
21 our nation, our State, and our local communities; and be it
22 further
 
23     RESOLVED, That we urge the Governor of Illinois to issue a
24 suitable proclamation recognizing the contributions of Irish
25 Americans to Illinois and to proclaim March of 2006 as
26 Irish-American Heritage Month.
