HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, February 23, 2005, marked the 100th anniversary of
3 the beginning of Rotary International in Chicago in 1905; and
 
4     WHEREAS, The Rotarians of Mt. Vernon celebrated this
5 occasion with a signed proclamation by Mayor Milt Sees and a
6 joint meeting of Mt. Vernon Rotary and Mt. Vernon Rotary West;
7 and
 
8     WHEREAS, Rotary started in Mt. Vernon in 1920; the history
9 is rich with such past presidents as Myrl Lumbattis, Carl
10 Schweinfurth, J.L. Buford, Harold J. Howard, and Curtis Starr;
11 and
 
12     WHEREAS, The Rotary club grew, creating the opportunity for
13 a second club to start in 1983; through the years, the Mt.
14 Vernon Rotary clubs have been known for their community works
15 that have supported the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self",
16 one of which has been to assist in the international efforts to
17 eradicate polio by 2005; local members have raised money and
18 supported the Rotary Foundation to assist Rotarians
19 vaccinating millions of children around the globe from this
20 disfiguring disease; and
 
21     WHEREAS, To enhance better world understanding,
22 international students from such places as Russia, Mexico,
23 Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Australia, and France have lived
24 with Rotarians in Mt. Vernon; and
 
25     WHEREAS, Mt. Vernon students have been assisted in world
26 study to Germany, Japan, and Britain; members have been active
27 participants in the Group Study Exchange to send and receive
28 citizens from Thailand, Italy, South Africa, Argentina, Japan,
29 and Russia and prepare for the new exchange with Germany this
30 spring; and

1     WHEREAS, Locally, presidents Clete Winkelman and David
2 Lister work together with their members to support work at Mt.
3 Vernon Township High School with the Strive Program; this
4 program enables Rotarians to share skills with high school
5 students to enter vocational areas prepared with life skills in
6 budgeting, resume writing, and interviewing knowledge; other
7 local activities include flag service on the holidays, trivia
8 nights, Cedarhurst food sales, City Wide Clean Up, Christmas
9 tree recycling, blood drives, and scholarships that are offered
10 by both clubs in Mt. Vernon for students to further their
11 education; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
14 we congratulate the Mt. Vernon Rotary clubs on the 100th
15 anniversary of the beginning of Rotary International in Chicago
16 and extend our sincere appreciation for the fellowship,
17 community service, and contributions the Rotarians of Mt.
18 Vernon provide to their community; and be it further
 
19     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20 presented to the Mt. Vernon Rotary and Mt. Vernon Rotary West
21 clubs as an expression of our esteem.
