HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, Brain Awareness Week is an international effort
3 organized by the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives to advance
4 public awareness about the progress and benefits of brain
5 research; the Dana Alliance is joined in the campaign by
6 partners in the United States and around the world, including
7 medical and research organizations, patient advocacy groups,
8 the National Institutes of Health and other government
9 agencies, service groups, hospitals and universities, K-12
10 schools, and professional organizations; and
 
11     WHEREAS, The Pilot Club of Jacksonville is participating in
12 this year's Brain Awareness Week; the Club is one of over 470
13 clubs in Pilot International, a global organization of
14 executive, business, and professional leaders working together
15 to improve the quality of life in local communities and
16 throughout the world; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Pilot International provides guidance and
18 encouragement to communities through sponsorship of safety and
19 security awareness programs, especially as they relate to
20 brain-related disorders; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Each year thousands of Illinoisans are diagnosed
22 with devastating disorders of the brain, including
23 Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, autism, and communication
24 disorders, all of which cause considerable pain and suffering;
25 and
 
26     WHEREAS, We are reaching a new era of discovery based on
27 the rapid progress that is being made in the study of the brain
28 and the powerful new tools available to neuroscientists; and
 
29     WHEREAS, These technical advances have already greatly
30 benefited people who are incapacitated by spinal cord injuries,

1 depressive disorders, epileptic seizures, Parkinson's disease,
2 Huntington's disease, muscular dystrophy, cystic fibrosis, and
3 other life-threatening disorders; and
 
4     WHEREAS, New insights from neuroscience research will give
5 us a more concise understanding of how people become addicted
6 to drugs and thereby provide more effective treatments for
7 those with chemical dependencies; and
 
8     WHEREAS, Scientists at Illinois' premiere universities,
9 private colleges, and research institutes are at the forefront
10 of many of the most promising efforts to understand the
11 complexities of the brain, to alleviate the pain and suffering
12 associated with brain disorders and reduce the cost of treating
13 neurological diseases; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16 we recognize the week of March 14-20, 2005, as Brain Awareness
17 Week in the State of Illinois; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to the Pilot Club of Jacksonville.
