HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois General Assembly are
3 saddened to learn of the passing of the Honorable Judge
4 Terrence "Terry" Hopkins of Mount Vernon, Illinois, on October
5 16, 2006; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Terrence Hopkins was born on March 6, 1948 in
7 Christopher; his parents were Gladys (Starkey) Hopkins and the
8 late George Hopkins, Sr.; and
 
9     WHEREAS, He received his Bachelor's degree from Southern
10 Illinois University Carbondale in 1970 and his law degree from
11 St. Louis University in 1974; he received a JLLM degree from
12 the judge's program at the University of Virginia Law School in
13 2004; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Judge Hopkins served as Franklin County State's
15 Attorney from 1976 to 1983 and as circuit judge in the Second
16 Judicial Circuit from 1983 to 1994; he was elected to serve as
17 a Fifth District Appellate Court Justice in 1994; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Judge Hopkins was a member of St. Mary Catholic
19 Church, where he was a member and past parish council president
20 and choir member; he was a member of St. John's Knights of
21 Columbus; he was a past Exalted Ruler of the West Frankfort
22 Elks Club; and a member of the Mount Vernon Elks Club; and
 
23     WHEREAS, He was a member and past president of the West
24 Frankfort Lions Club, a member of the West Frankfort Moose
25 Lodge, a sponsor of the Mount Vernon High School Mock Trial
26 Team and the Youth and Government Team, a member of the SIUC
27 Moot Court Board, and a member of the Illinois Judges
28 Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and the
29 Illinois Trial Lawyers Association; and

1     WHEREAS, Judge Hopkins was a member of the Cedarhurst
2 Theater Troupe and the Pyramid Players of Rend Lake College; he
3 was also a long-time Democrat; and
 
4     WHEREAS, Judge Terrence Hopkins is survived by his wife,
5 Jeri Hopkins; his mother, Gladys Hopkins; his twin sons, Sean
6 Hopkins and his wife, Lisa, and Aaron M. Hopkins; his daughter,
7 Taylor Hornung; his brothers, George Hopkins, Jr., and his
8 wife, Tina, Leonard Hopkins and his wife, Lisa, and Mike
9 Hopkins and his wife, Holly; his sister, Maureen Hogg and her
10 husband, Jack; and his nieces and nephews; he was preceded in
11 death by his father, George Hopkins, Sr.; therefore, be it
 
12     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
13 NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE
14 SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that we mourn, along with all who
15 knew him, the passing of the Honorable Judge Terrence Hopkins;
16 and be it further
 
17     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18 presented to the family of the Honorable Judge Terrence
19 Hopkins.
