HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois wish to recognize Hallie Amey for being an
4 outstanding community leader of the Wentworth Gardens
5 community; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Hallie Bronkens moved to Chicago when she was in
7 her early twenties; shortly after her arrival, she met and
8 married Frank Amey; they moved to Wentworth Gardens in the
9 spring of 1951 with their three daughters, Frankie, Ethel, and
10 Vicki; their fourth daughter, Zelma, was born on the eve of Mr.
11 Amey's untimely death in 1958; Mrs. Amey was devastated by the
12 death of her husband and overwhelmed by the task of raising
13 four daughters on her own; and
 
14     WHEREAS, Mrs. Amey's first involvement in the community
15 began with the formation of Blue Bird, Brownie, and Girl Scout
16 troops for young girls in the community; she then began working
17 with the PTA of Robert S. Abbott Elementary School; and
 
18     WHEREAS, When her youngest daughter, Zelma, reached
19 pre-school age, Mrs. Amey and some of her neighbors organized a
20 pre-school in the community center because there was no Head
21 Start Program available; the first group of children from that
22 pre-school were so well-prepared for Kindergarten that they
23 were put in an accelerated class; despite her work in the
24 community, Mrs. Amey always found time to take her family to
25 church, choir rehearsal, and BTU at the Progressive Baptist
26 Church; and
 
27     WHEREAS, Mrs. Amey was offered the position of Community
28 Liaison Representative at the Robert S. Abbott Elementary
29 School as a result of her volunteer work; she later was hired
30 by the Chicago Housing Authority as a Community Representative;
31 around 1962, a Resident Council was formed in Wentworth Gardens

1 which functioned until 1971, when it was reorganized and became
2 the Local Advisory Council; Mrs. Amey decided at this time that
3 she could be more effective as a volunteer and has worked in
4 that capacity since her resignation from the Chicago Housing
5 Authority; and
 
6     WHEREAS, The Local Advisory Council opened a laundromat in
7 1968 and a grocery store in 1972 because there was a need in
8 the community; Mrs. Amey has always been active in the
9 community and has contributed countless hours for the
10 betterment of Wentworth Gardens; and
 
11     WHEREAS, In recognition of her many contributions to the
12 community, Mrs. Amey is being honored with a street naming
13 ceremony at Pershing Road and Wentworth; therefore, be it
 
14     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
15 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
16 recognize Hallie Amey for being an outstanding community leader
17 of the Wentworth Gardens community; and be it further
 
18     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19 presented to Hallie Amey as an expression of our respect and
20 esteem.
