HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
3 State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate Edward J. Moskal
4 on being re-elected President of the Polish National Alliance
5 (PNA); and
 
6     WHEREAS, Mr. Moskal was born in Chicago on May 21, 1924 to
7 Sophie (Grzyb) and Joseph Moskal; he attended St. John Cantius
8 School; following his formal education and three years in the
9 United States Army, Mr. Moskal returned home and began his
10 career with the Polish National Alliance, which he joined in
11 1942; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Mr. Moskal married Wanda Sadlik on November 21,
13 1946; they have one daughter, Pamela; three granddaughters,
14 Joyce, Mary, and Lisa; and three great-grandchildren, Joseph,
15 Jason, and Jamie; and
 
16     WHEREAS, Mr. Moskal was first active in his local lodge,
17 rising through the ranks; he devoted himself to the performance
18 of charitable functions on behalf of ill members; subsequently,
19 he was recording secretary, delegate to his Council 75,
20 Vice-President, and later President of his Council of the
21 Polish National Alliance; and
 
22     WHEREAS, In 1963, the PNA Convention delegates chose Mr.
23 Moskal to serve as a National Director; by chairing the finance
24 committee, he earned great respect from his colleagues because
25 the committee's report and recommendations for increased
26 fiscal responsibility laid a foundation for a new approach to
27 lending which continues to be in force today; and
 
28     WHEREAS, In 1967, Mr. Moskal was elected National Treasurer
29 of the PNA, a post he held for 20 years; his radical
30 reorganization of the office led to a new management system as

1 well as the improvement of the efficiency of the office; he was
2 instrumental in developing a sound, balanced investment policy
3 which led to a profitable diversification of the multi-million
4 dollar investment portfolio of the PNA; from 1975 until his
5 election to the presidency of the PNA, he also served as
6 Chairman of the Finance and Control Committees; and
 
7     WHEREAS, Mr. Moskal's leadership skills and successful
8 performance as an officer led to his being elected President of
9 the Polish National Alliance at a special plenary meeting of
10 the PNA Supervisory Council in October of 1988; three weeks
11 later, he was elected President of the Polish American
12 Congress, an umbrella organization of the American Polonia
13 which unites over 1,200 Polish American organizations
14 throughout the United States and serves as the primary voice of
15 the Polish community on charitable, social, civic, and
16 political matters; and
 
17     WHEREAS, Mr. Moskal is also the President of Alliance
18 Printers and Publishers, which publishes Dziennik Zwiazkowy
19 (Polish Daily News) and the bi-weekly Zgoda, which has a
20 circulation of over 200,000; he is also President of Alliance
21 Communications' radio station, WPNA, which is known as the
22 "International Voice of Chicago", features programs in Polish,
23 and includes ten other ethnic groups in its programming; and
 
24     WHEREAS, Mr. Moskal served as a member of the Book and
25 Library Advisory Committee at the United States Information
26 Agency, as a member of Governor Edgar's Transition Committee,
27 and as an honorary pallbearer appointed by President George
28 Bush for the return of Ignacy Paderewski's body to Poland; and
29 he was appointed by President Bill Clinton to accompany
30 Vice-President Al Gore for the Ghetto Uprising anniversary
31 ceremonies in Warsaw; and
 
32     WHEREAS, As President of the Polish American Congress

1 Charitable Foundation, he has been instrumental in arranging a
2 great variety of ways to assist Poland, especially after the
3 fall of Communism; he is an outspoken supporter of the entry of
4 Poland into NATO; for his efforts for the benefit of Poland, he
5 was awarded the highest civilian honor by President Lech
6 Walesa, the Commander's Cross with Star; in 1997, he was made
7 an Honorary Citizen of the city of Krakow, and the University
8 of Poznan Medical School bestowed the title of Honorary Doctor
9 upon him; the same year, he was granted a private audience with
10 Pope John Paul II to discuss Polish and Polish American matters
11 with the Pope; and
 
12     WHEREAS, During his tenure as President of the Polish
13 National Alliance, he has brought such innovations to the PNA
14 as in-house computerized operations and a significant presence
15 on the internet through the organization's websites;
16 therefore, be it
 
17     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
18 NINETY-THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
19 congratulate Edward J. Moskal on being re-elected President of
20 the Polish National Alliance; and be it further
 
21     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22 presented to Mr. Moskal as an expression of our respect and
23 esteem and with many thanks for his tireless efforts on behalf
24 of Polish Americans.
