SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Harold Junior Land of Topeka, who
4passed away on May 15, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Harold Land was born in Pekin to Harold and Mary
6(Watson) Land on December 27, 1949; he was drafted into the
7United States Army as an 11B Infantryman in 1969, where he
8completed Expert Jungle Training in Panama before being
9deployed to Vietnam with the 9th Infantry Division; he took
10part in months of heavy combat operations near Saigon and the
11Mekong River Delta and was awarded two Purple Hearts, the
12Combat Infantry Badge, and the Vietnam Service Medal with two
13Bronze Service Stars; he was honorably discharged in 1971; he
14married Carol Siltman-Terrill in Topeka on June 29, 1991; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Harold Land retired from the United States Post
16Office in 2016, after 20 years of service, and was a member of
17the National Postal Mail Handlers Union; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Harold Land supported the Disabled American
19Veterans, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and multiple other
20veteran organizations; he always had an American Flag on
21display and served as a mentor for younger generations of
22veterans in his family; and

1    WHEREAS, Harold Land loved the outdoors and kept busy
2hunting, fishing, splitting wood, caring for his horses, and
3performing all the duties that came with caring for his
4property; in the summertime, he could be found in his garden
5working hard to produce a big harvest of vegetables to
6preserve for his family; he enjoyed NASCAR, riding his Harley,
7and a good game of cards; he treasured his time with family,
8always taking the time to teach them valuable lessons when the
9opportunity arose; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Harold Land was preceded in death by his parents;
11his sister, Darlene Land; his brothers-in-law, Joe Stoehr, Bob
12Westerhouse, and Bob VanEtten; his nieces, Bobbi Jo Tyler and
13Amber Land; and his nephew, J.D. Siltman; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Harold Land is survived by his wife, Carol; his
15sons, Scott (Pam) and Matt (Chelsea) Terrill; his
16grandchildren, Chris, Kylie (Seth Newcomb), and Emily Terrill
17(Nick Sondag); his great-grandchildren, Ryan Terrill, Noah and
18Theodore Newcomb, and Hadley and Lucah Sondag; his sisters,
19Vivian Stoehr, Peggy Westerhouse, Linda VanEtten, Regina
20Trout, and Cherie Helfers; his brothers, Gary (Jodi), Terry
21"Turk" (Mary), and Doug (Janice) Land; and several nieces and
22nephews; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Harold Junior Land and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Harold Land as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
