SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of James H. "Jim" McGrath of Springfield,
4who passed away on January 24, 2024; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Jim McGrath was born on a farm west of Woodson to
6William and Ida (Begnel) McGrath on July 13, 1929; he
7graduated from Routt High School in Jacksonville; he married
8Virginia K. Hanley on April 29, 1950; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Jim McGrath worked as a truck driver for Amrhein
10Bakery; he became a member of the Painters Local #90 in 1951
11and advanced to the position of business agent, which he held
12for 38 years; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Jim McGrath served on many boards and
14commissions, including as president of the Central Illinois
15Building and Construction Trades Council, chairman of both the
16Illinois State Painters Welfare Fund and the Illinois Painters
17State Conference, precinct committeeman for the Sangamon
18County Democratic Party, trustee of the Springfield Sanitary
19District, and deputy director for the Illinois Department of
20Labor; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Jim McGrath was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs;

1he enjoyed gardening, betting on the ponies with a special
2group of friends, and following the stock market and politics;
3one of his greatest pleasures was spending time with his
4children; he enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in
5sports and other activities and always remembered to make them
6feel special on their birthdays; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Jim McGrath was preceded in death by his wife,
8Virginia; his son, Jack McGrath; his brothers, Gerald "Jake"
9and Bernie; his sisters, Theresa, Bernice, Cecelia, Aggie, and
10Rosie; and his son-in-law, Tommy Freeman; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Jim McGrath is survived by his sons, James
12(Sonja), Patrick (Michele), Michael (Valerie), Robert
13(Debbie), Larry (Cathy), and David (Anne); his daughters,
14Peggy McGrath, MaryJane Miller, and Theresa Freeman; his
15daughter-in-law, Sam McGrath; 18 grandchildren; several
16great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews;
17therefore, be it
 
18    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
19ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
20James H. "Jim" McGrath and extend our sincere condolences to
21his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
