SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of John Pickett, who passed away on March
424, 2023; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Pickett was born to Johnny and Alberta
6Pickett in Meadville, Mississippi on June 20, 1953; he moved
7to Chicago with his family as a child; his formative education
8began in Chicago Public Schools, and he graduated from Chicago
9Vocational High School (CVS); he attended Illinois Medical
10Institute, where he earned his certification in EKG and
11phlebotomy; he married Annie Marie on December 30, 1973, and
12their union produced three daughters; and
 
13    WHEREAS, John Pickett held several positions while
14employed at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center, known
15today as Rush University Medical Center, including phlebotomy
16technician, manager of the Infectious Diseases Department, and
17customer care coordinator in Client Services; he was a
18dedicated employee for 41 years, retiring in the spring of
192017; and
 
20    WHEREAS, John Pickett committed to his faith at a young
21age; he was a devoted member of Greater Harvest Missionary
22Baptist Church, where he was known as "Uncle John" to many; he

1served as a Cub Scout troop leader, a special events
2coordinator, a Pastor Aide member, and a Radio Choir member
3for over 30 years; he faithfully served as a deacon and as an
4elder; he often assisted elderly members, offering to help to
5them in any way he could, often checking on them by phone,
6taking them to run errands, or picking up groceries they
7needed; and
 
8    WHEREAS, John Pickett was a hardworking family man, a
9faithful and devoted husband, and a fun-loving person who
10cherished his family; a doting grandfather, he was
11affectionately known as "Pa-Pa" to his grandchildren; he was
12an avid Bible reader and often quoted scripture; he loved
13listening to gospel music and singing; he often planned
14elaborate outings and enjoyed trying new restaurants; and
 
15    WHEREAS, John Pickett will be remembered for his exuberant
16presence, his thoughtful heart, and his witty, humorous, and
17sarcastic statements; his life was a testament to his love of
18his family and of service; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Although John Pickett was born into the Pickett
20family, he was further loved and supported by his godmother,
21the late Masora Shelley, and three families who loved him like
22he was their own, Mother Alice Thomas (the late Eddie),
23Darryl, Denise, Sherise, Matthew, Tawana, Randall, and

1Paulette, the late Deacon Hezekiah Brown and the late Mother
2Ida Brown, Vickie, Hezekiah Jr., Anthony, Kimberly, Michelle,
3and Curtis, and Mother Jean Yokley, Valerie, David, and
4William; and
 
5    WHEREAS, John Pickett was preceded in death by his parents
6and his siblings, Johnny Pickett Jr., Dorothy Ersery, and
7Robert Middleton; and
 
8    WHEREAS, John Pickett is survived by his wife of 49 years,
9Annie Marie; his daughters, Shanese Marie, Antoinette Jameica,
10and LaNesha DaNette; his honorary son, Curtis; his
11grandchildren, Anisa Saneah, Ayana Saria, and Asiah Savon; his
12sister, Darcinni; his sister-in-law, Carolyn Morris; his
13brother-in-law, Steven (Donna) Motley; his nieces, Lynette
14(Aaron), Carolyn, Markieta (Lance), Latonya, Kenyatta
15(Ronald), Shanell, Cassandra, and Nicole; his nephews, Andre
16(Chalon), Steven Jr., Jermaine, and Lavon; his great-nieces,
17Deva, Kalyn, Kiera, Andrea, and Brooklyn; his great-nephews,
18Jeremiah, Ronald Jr., Cameron, Aaron Jr., Andrew, and Gavin;
19his special sons, James Buchanan, Charles Bradley, Oscar
20Seaton, Kenny Byrd, Nathan James, Edwin Poindexter Sr.,
21Jonathan Cole, Vernon Cole, and Michael Edwards; his godsons,
22Duwan Morris and Greg Holmes Jr.; his bonus grandchildren,
23Ramsey, Kevin, Edwin Jr., and Marsalis; his special brothers,
24Greg (Shirley) Holmes Sr. and Willie Holmes; a host of aunts,

1uncles, cousins, and close friends; and his former Rush
2University Medical Center coworkers and friends; therefore, be
3it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
5ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
6John Pickett and extend our sincere condolences to his family,
7friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of John Pickett as an expression of our
10deepest sympathy.
