SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate wish to
3congratulate Emil Garippo on the occasion of his 100th
4birthday and thank him for his military service during World
5War II; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Emil Garippo was born to immigrant Italian
7parents and raised in the Chicago neighborhood of Little
8Italy; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Emil Garippo enlisted in the U.S. military during
10World War II in 1944, joining his brother, Mike, who was
11deployed overseas; and
 
12    WHEREAS, After serving in World War II, Emil Garippo's
13arrival home led him to meeting his future wife of 74 years,
14Dean Ruggs; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Emil Garippo followed his late brother's lead and
16entered college, graduating with a degree in education from
17DePaul University in 1949 and later earning his master's
18degree; in doing so, he became among the earliest Americans to
19benefit from the G.I. Bill and the first in his family to earn
20a college degree; and

1    WHEREAS, Emil Garippo started teaching in Chicago, rising
2to assistant principal of Spalding High School, one of the
3nation's first public schools for children with disabilities;
4noted by administrators for his talent, he was brought to the
5central office to help oversee citywide transportation; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Emil Garippo and his family moved to Elmhurst in
71951; within a few years, much of his extended family
8followed, including his parents and his sister's family; now,
9many generational relatives live in the area thanks to him;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Emil Garippo still works out daily, with a break
12on weekends, spending 20 minutes on his stationary bike before
13completing a series of yoga-like exercises; he has never
14undergone surgery and only started using a walker and hearing
15aids in the last few years; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Emil Garippo watches the news and sports every
17day, but he mostly enjoys spending time with his children,
18four grandchildren, and now two great-grandchildren, wishing
19them all to have a good life and to do the right thing;
20therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Emil

1Garippo on his 100th birthday, thank him for his military
2service and sacrifice to the United States of America, and
3wish him the best in all his future endeavors; and be it
4further
 
5    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
6presented to Emil Garippo as an expression of our esteem and
7respect.
