SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Raymond Nihlean, who passed away on
4November 11, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Raymond Nihlean was born to Raymond and Colleen
6Nihlean in Chicago on March 3, 1963; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Raymond Nihlean was a landlord with a heart;
8during the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his team connected
9renters with programs, including rent grants and resources for
10food; for one elderly tenant, he not only found her supportive
11senior housing and 24/7 caregivers, but he also made funeral
12arrangements with her pastor after her passing; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Raymond Nihlean was a philanthropist who provided
14resources to help other entrepreneurs flourish, including the
15Edgewater Uptown Builders Association (EUBA) and other
16community organizations; through EUBA, he personally provided
17and engineered state-of-the-art sound and visual equipment to
18help people communicate more effectively; he donated over
19$35,000 to help fund Northwestern University's Kellogg School
20of Management training program for local business owners who
21wanted to take their companies to the next level, and his
22donation led to the program receiving city funding; he also

1provided funding and materials for the painting of the mosaic
2at the gateway to the Bryn Mawr Historic District; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Raymond Nihlean was committed to the Edgewater
4community and youth needs, mentoring many young people and
5being there for his neighbors; at local events, children and
6adults alike delighted in his convertible King Midget, a tiny
7red racing car with headlights that squirted water; for 15
8years, he also loved racing; he enjoyed riding his red ATV
9snowplow on over two miles of sidewalks and alleys after a
10heavy snowfall so neighbors could safely leave their homes;
11and
 
12    WHEREAS, Raymond Nihlean was known for his optimism, his
13contagious laugh, and his zest for life; he will be remembered
14for his generosity and his deeply felt joyfulness; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Raymond Nihlean was preceded in death by his
16parents and his parents-in-law, Gus and June Travlos; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Raymond Nihlean is survived by his wife of 21
18years, Tina Travlos Nihlean; his sister-in-law, Elaine
19Travlos; his brother, Damian Nihlean; his sisters, Mary Henry
20and Juli Harmon; his nephews, Samuel Henry and Bentley Aiden
21Joyner; his nieces, Colleen and Amanda Nihlean; his cousins,
22Suzanne Cosgrove, Linn Nihlean, and Cathy Kubo; his many

1family members, friends, and colleagues; and his service dog,
2Baby Ray; therefore, be it
 
3    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
4ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
5Raymond Nihlean and extend our sincere condolences to his
6family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
7further
 
8    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
9presented to the family of Raymond Nihlean as an expression of
10our deepest sympathy.
