SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, It is highly fitting that the Illinois General
3Assembly pays honor and respect to those who have served their
4country and communities; and
 
5    WHEREAS, United States Representative Lane Allen Evans was
6born in Rock Island in 1951; he enlisted with the United States
7Marine Corps during the Vietnam War at the age of 17; he was
8stationed in Okinawa, Japan and was discharged in 1971; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Rep. Evans graduated from Augustana College in
10Rock Island in 1974 and earned a Juris Doctor from Georgetown
11University in 1977; he started his legal career as an attorney
12with the Quad Cities Legal Clinic in Moline; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Rep. Evans served in the United States House of
14Representatives for 24 years, from January of 1983 through
15January of 2007; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Rep. Evan's passion as a congressman was for
17advocating on behalf of veterans and obtaining for them the
18high-quality care and benefits that they deserved; he
19sponsored and helped pass the Agent Orange Act of 1991; he was
20awarded the Silver Helmet award from the American Veterans
21Group (AMVETS) in 1995; and

1    WHEREAS, Rep. Evans announced that he would not seek
2reelection in November 2006 and retired at the end of the 109th
3Congress; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Rep. Evans passed away on November 5, 2014;
5therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
7ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
8REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we designate I-74 in
9the Quad Cities from 4th Avenue to I-280 as the "Rep. Lane
10Evans Memorial Highway"; and be it further
 
11    RESOLVED, That the Illinois Department of Transportation
12is requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with
13State and federal regulations, appropriate plaques or signs
14giving notice of the name "Rep. Lane Evans Memorial Highway";
15and be it further
 
16    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
17presented to the family of Rep. Evans, the Mayor of Moline, and
18the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation.
