SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The U.S. Army became the first established branch
3of the United States military on June 14, 1775, and millions of
4men and women have served their country since then; and
 
5    WHEREAS, To honor and compensate veterans of the War of
61812, the United States government provided soldiers with land
7grants for the land between the Illinois and Mississippi
8Rivers, which drove the initial settlement of the "Bounty
9Land" of Illinois, bringing veterans to Quincy even before the
10city was formally organized; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Even in its earliest days, Quincy's veterans
12assisted the State in quelling the Blackhawk Indian unrest and
13brought peace to the Moorman settlement in Nauvoo; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Thousands of Quincyans fought in the Civil War to
15preserve the Union and to end slavery, and in every military
16conflict since, Quincy's sons and daughters have served their
17State and nation in all branches of the military with honor and
18distinction; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Upon returning home from their assigned duties,
20these same sons and daughters devoted themselves to building
21those institutions of government, church, and school to

1preserve Quincy's rich heritage; and
 
2    WHEREAS, The City of Quincy has had a profound connection
3to the men and women who served this country since 1886 with
4the construction of the Illinois Soldiers and Sailors Home;
5the city's connection to military veterans continues to grow
6through programs such as the Great River Honor Flight, Fishing
7for Freedom, and the Tri-State Warrior Outreach; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Military veterans have been an important part of
9Quincy from its founding to today; the tenets of freedom that
10are enshrined in the U.S. Constitution remain rights held
11dearly and cultivated by its residents today; and
 
12    WHEREAS, This veteran heritage has ensured that the many
13natural wonders that surround Quincy, such as the forests and
14rivers, the fertile lowlands, and the bluffs, continue to
15provide in abundance the outdoor experiences that originally
16drew the city's forefathers to this land; therefore, be it
 
17    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL
18ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE HOUSE OF
19REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING HEREIN, that we declare the City of
20Quincy as "Veterans City" for the biennium of 2023 and 2024;
21and be it further

1    RESOLVED, That military veterans are held in the highest
2regard for their service and their sacrifice in Quincy; and be
3it further
 
4    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
5presented to the Mayor of Quincy and the residents of the
6Illinois Veterans' Home at Quincy.
