SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
625 ILCS 5/3-699.23 new

    Amends the Illinois Vehicle Code. Allows the Secretary of State to issue special registration plates designated as Sons of the American Legion plates to residents of this State who meet the eligibility requirements prescribed by the Secretary of State. Provides that the plates shall display the Sons of the American Legion logo. Provides that in all other respects, the design, color, and format of the plates shall be within the discretion of the Secretary of State.

1    AN ACT concerning transportation.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Illinois Vehicle Code is amended by adding
5Section 3-699.23 as follows:
 
6    (625 ILCS 5/3-699.23 new)
7    Sec. 3-699.23. Sons of the American Legion plates.
8    (a) In addition to any other special license plate, the
9Secretary, upon receipt of all applicable fees and
10applications made in the form prescribed by the Secretary, may
11issue Sons of the American Legion plates to residents of
12Illinois who meet eligibility requirements prescribed by the
13Secretary. The special plate issued under this Section shall
14be affixed only to passenger vehicles of the first division,
15motorcycles, and motor vehicles of the second division
16weighing not more than 8,000 pounds. Plates issued under this
17Section shall expire according to the staggered multi-year
18procedure established by Section 3-414.1 of this Code.
19    (b) The plates shall display the Sons of the American
20Legion logo. In all other respects, the design, color, and
21format of the plates shall be within the discretion of the
22Secretary. The Secretary may, in his or her discretion, allow
23the plates to be issued as vanity plates or personalized

1plates in accordance with Section 3-405.1 of this Code. The
2plates are not required to designate "Land of Lincoln", as
3prescribed in subsection (b) of Section 3-412 of this Code.
4The Secretary shall prescribe the eligibility requirements
5and, in his or her discretion, shall approve and prescribe
6stickers or decals as provided under Section 3-412.
