HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The Cold War consisted of the rivalry between the
3United States and the Soviet Union that developed after World
4War II, representing the competing economic, political, and
5social values of their nations and their respective allies;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, The Cold War involved hundreds of military
8exercises and operations that occurred between September 2,
91945 and December 26, 1991; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Millions of Americans valiantly stood watch as
11members of the Armed Forces during the Cold War; and
 
12    WHEREAS, The Cold War was permeated by an atmosphere of
13fear over the potential use of nuclear weapons on a scale that
14would annihilate humanity; and
 
15    WHEREAS, During the Cold War, the men and women of the
16Armed Forces used their training, expertise, and restraint to
17prevent escalation of nuclear tensions and to protect America
18and the world from nuclear war; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Many Americans sacrificed their lives in
20conflicts during the Cold War in the cause of defending

1democracy and promoting world peace and stability; and
 
2    WHEREAS, It is appropriate to remember the many sacrifices
3and contributions to the cause of freedom made by the
4outstanding men and women who served in the Armed Forces
5during the Cold War; therefore, be it
 
6    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
7HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
8we declare December 26, 2023 and December 26, 2024 as Cold War
9Veterans Recognition Day in honor of the contributions and
10sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces during the Cold
11War; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That we encourage Cold War Veterans Recognition
13Day to be observed with appropriate activities, programs, and
14services.
