|
2 | | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 | | Representatives wish to recognize Elgin High School on |
4 | | continuing its legacy of helping all students develop the |
5 | | skills necessary for lifelong success; and
|
6 | | WHEREAS, Elgin High School is one of the oldest high |
7 | | schools in the State of Illinois, celebrating its 150th |
8 | | anniversary in 2019, and is a beloved educational institution |
9 | | that has continually aspired to be a place of "Education for |
10 | | All"; and
|
11 | | WHEREAS, Founded in 1869, Elgin High School's founder, |
12 | | Charles F. Kimball, insisted that "no other public interest, |
13 | | whether it be the paving of streets, the building of a bridge, |
14 | | the laying of a system of sewerage...is of so great importance |
15 | | to this community as the schools of the city"; and
|
16 | | WHEREAS, Elgin High School had 12 students enrolled in the |
17 | | first class; today, more than 2,000 students are enrolled, |
18 | | with the course of study adapting to fit the changing times, |
19 | | from classical to commercial, comprehensive/college |
20 | | preparatory, and career path; and
|
21 | | WHEREAS, Elgin High School has occupied four locations, |
|

1 | | and the school has resided on Maroon Drive since 1972; in the |
2 | | 1960s, a movement to change the school's name was met with firm |
3 | | resolve on the part of the community to remain the Elgin High |
4 | | School Maroons; and
|
5 | | WHEREAS, Elgin High School has striven to educate, |
6 | | empower, and equip all students to become compassionate, |
7 | | contributing citizens; and
|
8 | | WHEREAS, Since its founding, Elgin High School graduates |
9 | | have made contributions as good neighbors, citizens, |
10 | | scientists, artists, physicians, musicians, athletes, factory |
11 | | workers, entrepreneurs, lawyers, engineers, activists, |
12 | | soldiers, leaders, clerks, inventors, writers, laborers, first |
13 | | responders, philanthropists, builders, and teachers to Elgin |
14 | | and beyond; therefore, be it

15 | | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE |
16 | | HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
17 | | we recognize Elgin High School on continuing its legacy of |
18 | | helping all students develop the skills necessary for lifelong |
19 | | success as active and valuable members of a global and |
20 | | ever-changing society; and be it further

21 | | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
22 | | presented to Elgin High School as a symbol of our esteem and |
