HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the University of
4Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) on the
5occasion of its 50th anniversary; and
 
6    WHEREAS, For half a century, UICOMP has fulfilled a
7three-part mission of service, education, and research; and
 
8    WHEREAS, UICOMP was founded as the Peoria Medical School
9by a group of local physicians and community leaders in 1970
10with the goal to train physicians who would remain in Peoria
11and central Illinois communities to practice medicine; over
12the past 50 years, their vision has come to fruition in
13preparing future physicians, providing clinical services, and
14conducting impactful research; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Today, UICOMP plays a significant role in the
16regional economy, with healthcare being the largest employment
17sector in Greater Peoria; and
 
18    WHEREAS, According to data from the Greater Peoria
19Economic Development Council, UICOMP includes 708 healthcare
20establishments that employ 29,731 people, providing 16% of
21area jobs; and

1    WHEREAS, UICOMP trains over 500 medical students,
2residents, and fellows annually in Peoria, including 244
3students in the four-year curriculum; it enrolls 271 residents
4and fellows in 13 different residency programs and 29 fellows
5in its eight fellowships; and
 
6    WHEREAS, UICOMP's faculty includes 1,369 faculty members
7responsible for educating and training the future physicians
8and, of those, 170 are full-time, 80 are part-time, and 1,119
9are volunteer; its faculty provides clinical services at OSF
10Saint Francis Medical Center, Children's Hospital of Illinois,
11and Carle Health Methodist Hospital, with faculty covering a
12wide spectrum of clinical services, from pediatrics to
13neurosurgery to psychiatry, including serving the community
14both in hospital and ambulatory practice; and
 
15    WHEREAS, UICOMP conducts clinical research and outcomes
16research, and its primary basic science research department is
17the Cancer Biology and Pharmacology (CBP) Department, where
18faculty conduct research on cancer biology, neuroscience, and
19ion channel biology; ongoing research is focused on brain
20tumors, breast and prostate cancer, Alzheimer's, dementia,
21stroke, and spinal cord injury, among other areas; and
 
22    WHEREAS, UICOMP relies on strong ties and collaboration

1with its community partners, with two affiliate hospitals
2within walking distance of campus, providing medical students
3and residents access to broad clinical experiences with more
4than 950 licensed hospital beds; and
 
5    WHEREAS, UICOMP will celebrate its anniversary at its
6Golden Gala event, which will be held at the Peoria Civic
7Center on Saturday, September 30, 2023; therefore, be it
 
8    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
9HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
10we congratulate the University of Illinois College of Medicine
11at Peoria (UICOMP) on its 50 years of service, education, and
12research; and be it further
 
13    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
14presented to UICOMP as an expression of our esteem and
15respect.
