HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the Village of Lemont on
4the occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Lemont was established in the year 1836, making
6it one of the oldest and most unique communities in
7northeastern Illinois; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Through the next several years, the I&M Canal was
9completed, the quarry industry grew steadily and dominated the
10economy of Lemont, churches and buildings were built of
11"Athens Marble", the Chicago & Alton Railroad was completed,
12and the population continued to grow; and
 
13    WHEREAS, On June 9, 1873, an election was held for the
14purpose of deciding whether the citizens residing within the
15Lemont territory should organize as a village under an act of
16legislature to provide for the incorporation of cities an
17villages; the results of such election were 243 for village
18organization and none against it; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Between 1890 and 1900, the Chicago Sanitary &
20Ship Canal was built and boosted Lemont's population; the
21village continued to prosper, families claimed land, new

1businesses opened, and the town expanded; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Through hard work and cooperation, pioneers built
3Lemont, and their spirit remains part of the fabric of the
4village as it progresses toward its future with a commitment
5to preserving its heritage while fostering growth and
6embracing its strong community spirit; therefore, be it
 
7    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
8HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
9we congratulate the Village of Lemont on the 150th anniversary
10of its founding, and we wish the citizens many more wonderful
11years; and be it further
 
12    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
13presented to the mayor of Lemont as a symbol of our respect and
14esteem.
