HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to recognize Rosa Arreola for her 13
4years of work as voter registration coordinator for the
5Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR);
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Voting and civic engagement are essential
8components of our democracy; and
 
9    WHEREAS, Rosa Arreola's work was an crucial part of
10ICIRR's Democracy Project, an integrated non-partisan voter
11registration and mobilization campaign that has become a
12national model for immigrant empowerment through civic
13engagement over the past 20 years; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Every two years, during each biennial general
15election cycle, the Democracy Project hires and trains 20
16fellows that run voter registration and turnout efforts in
17immigrant communities, partnering with organizations based in
18these communities to educate, inform, and mobilize naturalized
19citizens; and
 
20    WHEREAS, During and in between each election cycle, Rosa
21Arreola led teams of volunteers to nearly every single

1naturalization ceremony over the course of 13 years to
2register all new citizens who wanted to do so; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Rosa Arreola was the face and voice that greeted
4over 150,000 new citizens as they walked out of their
5swearing-in ceremony and enabled them, as one of their first
6acts as new citizens, to register to vote; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Rosa Arreola's teams of interns and volunteers
8have accounted for nearly half of the 356,000 new citizens
9registered by the ICIRR's Democracy Project since 2009,
10ensuring that each new citizen would have a voice in the
11governance of their communities, state, and new home country;
12therefore, be it
 
13    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
14HUNDRED THIRD GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
15we recognize Rosa Arreola for her 13 years of work as voter
16registration coordinator for the Illinois Coalition for
17Immigrant and Refugee Rights (ICIRR), and we thank her for her
18dedication and leadership in making voter registration
19accessible to newly naturalized citizens; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21presented to Rosa Arreola as an expression of our esteem and
22respect.
