SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of John Richard "Dick" Schofield of
4Springfield, who passed away on July 11, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dick Schofield was born to John and Florence
6(Campbell) Schofield in Springfield on January 7, 1935; he
7spent the majority of his life in Springfield; he attended
8Harvard Park Grade School and could often be found playing
9baseball with his friends at Lincoln Park; he graduated from
10Springfield High School in 1953; he married Donna Jean Dabney
11in Omaha, Nebraska on June 16, 1956, and she preceded him in
12death on November 8, 2012; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dick Schofield, who came to be known as "Ducky",
14embarked on his career with Major League Baseball after
15graduating from high school; he was the first bonus baby, an
16amateur player who received a signing bonus and went straight
17to the Major Leagues, hired by the St. Louis Cardinals in July
181953; he played in the major leagues for a total of 19 seasons
19with a number of teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, the
20San Francisco Giants, the New York Yankees, the L.A. Dodgers,
21the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Boston Red Sox; during his
22tenure, he had the honor and privilege of playing in two World
23Series; he was a member of the 1960 World Champion Pittsburgh

1Pirates, during which he played a pivotal role in capturing
2the National League pennant that same year, and his second
3World Series appearance was while playing for the St. Louis
4Cardinals in 1968; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dick Schofield held other responsibilities when
6he was not playing baseball or helping raise his family,
7including becoming the all-time quarterback for the Circle
8Drive neighborhood football games; he enjoyed playing
9basketball, playing cards with his friends, and golfing; he
10was also passionate about working in the yard, and he
11especially enjoyed landscaping and mowing the grass; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dick Schofield was known for being an intense,
13successful, and dedicated athlete and a very giving and kind
14individual; he helped many people during his lifetime and
15never expected anything in return; most importantly, he was
16extremely proud of his family; he enjoyed cheering for his
17children and grandchildren during their many sporting events
18and activities; he especially loved to watch his son, Dick,
19play baseball over the years; he will be remembered for his
20passion for baseball and for making his family, friends, and
21Springfield proud; and
 
22    WHEREAS, Dick Schofield was preceded in death by his
23daughter, Tami Schofield, and his parents; and

1    WHEREAS, Dick Schofield is survived by his son, Dick
2Schofield; his daughter, Kim (Dennis) Werth; his
3grandchildren, Jayson (Julia) Werth, Hillary (Morgan) Werth,
4Hannah Werth, Haley (Chad Oldridge) Whitehurst, Gracie (Al)
5Werth, Hank Schofield, Hayden Schofield, and Millie Schofield;
6and his great-grandchildren, Jackson Werth, Judah Werth, Pyper
7Oldridge, Audrey Oldridge, and Riley Schofield; therefore, be
8it
 
9    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
10ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
11John Richard "Dick" Schofield and extend our sincere
12condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved
13him; and be it further
 
14    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
15presented to the family of Dick Schofield as an expression of
16our deepest sympathy.
