SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Thomas "Tom" Kane Cavanagh of
4Springfield, who passed away on October 17, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh was born to William Kane and Eleanor
6Margaret Lloyd Cavanagh in Springfield on September 20, 1955;
7he played on the undefeated youth baseball teams, the 1965
8Tolly's Market of the Clark Griffith Little League and the
91969 Marriott's Pharmacy of the Washington Park Pony League;
10he was a graduate of St. Agnes Grade School, Griffin High
11School, where he was a member of the 1973 City Basketball
12Champion Griffin Cyclones, and Georgetown University; he
13married Diann Reed in Anna Maria, Florida in 2013; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh worked for many years for the
15Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs in the
16Job Training Division and the Division of Audits; he then had a
1732-year career as a local elected official; he served on the
18Springfield Park Board, as Sangamon County Auditor, and four
19terms as Sangamon County Treasurer; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh served in leadership roles with the
21Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD), the Illinois
22County Auditors' Association, and the Illinois County

1Treasurers' Association; he was appointed by Governor Ryan to
2the Illinois Local Records Commission; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh was awarded the IAPD's Presidential
4Award for his service as association treasurer in 1996; he was
5a two-time Illinois County Treasurer of the Year and the 2018
6Illinois County Official of the Year; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh was a member of the Sangamo Club,
8the American Business Club, Knights of Columbus Council 364,
9Elks Lodge #158, the Tara Hills Homeowners' Association, and
10the Georgetown University Alumni Admissions Program; he was
11active in the St. John's Breadline ministry through St. Agnes
12Church; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh enjoyed sports and rooted for the
14St. Louis Cardinals, the Chicago Bears, and the Fighting
15Illini; he had a fondness for travel of any kind and was able
16to enjoy many fun adventures with his wife in his later years;
17he was very interested in geography with waterfalls being a
18personal favorite; he had a lifelong interest in American
19history and recorded hundreds of C-SPAN lectures, which he
20enjoyed viewing in his spare time; he had a fondness for French
21baguettes, Belgian beer, Irish sweaters, Italian cuisine,
22British TV mysteries, Australian licorice, Canadian whiskey,
23and an all too rare Cuban cigar; and

1    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh was preceded in death by his parents
2and his brothers-in-law, Jeff Magill and Tom Witges; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Tom Cavanagh is survived by his wife; his son,
4Matt (Kalena) Cavanagh; his daughter, Courtney (Alexa
5Machulis) Cavanagh; his granddaughter, Cameron Busby Cavanagh;
6his five sisters, Anne Magill, Mary (Tom) Corcoran, Maureen
7(Randy) Squires, Katy (Joe) Khayyat, and Susan (Bob) Larkin;
8his three brothers, Bill (Colleen Lucas) Cavanagh, Bob
9(Maureen) Cavanagh, and Pat Cavanagh; his aunt, Sandy
10Cavanagh; his sisters-in-law, Lisa Witges and Sandra Kinion;
11and his many nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
13ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
14Thomas "Tom" Kane Cavanagh and extend our sincere condolences
15to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
16it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Tom Cavanagh as an expression of our
19deepest sympathy.
