SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Paul Francis Schafer of Springfield,
4who passed away on September 5, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was born in Detroit, Michigan on
6December 3, 1962; he was the son of Donald and Margaret Madigan
7Schafer; he graduated from Central Catholic High School; he
8earned his bachelor's degree in Accounting from Illinois State
9University, where he dabbled in college football; he married
10Marie K. "Katie" Kerner in Bloomington on June 15, 1984; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was a certified public accountant
12(CPA) and a co-founding partner of Eck, Schafer & Punke, LLP;
13he was known for always betting on himself, believing in his
14abilities, and trusting his partners; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Alongside his wife Katie, Paul Schafer co-founded
16The Fat Ass 5K & Street Party for Charity, an idea that was
17borne out of a resolve to contribute following his sister
18Mary's diagnosis of multiple sclerosis; through their charity,
19over $1.5 million has been donated in Mary's honor and memory
20since 2008; his most trusted friends and family will carry on
21his legacy; and

1    WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was a member of Blessed Sacrament
2Church; he was a diehard Chicago Cubs fan, sneaking into radio
3booths, serving as a peanut vendor for one day at Wrigley
4Stadium, and witnessing the Cubs' Game 7 World Series victory
5with his son Patrick; he was a scorned Detroit Lions fan; he
6enjoyed sharing adventures with his wife as they took turns
7surprising each other with vacation destinations; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was known for his legendary
9kindness, compassion, humor, bravery, and perseverance; he was
10a loving husband, a dedicated father, and a loyal friend; he
11enjoyed thoroughly embarrassing his family, especially his
12children, while also motivating, challenging, and encouraging
13them every day; he led by example, especially through his last
14days; he will be dearly missed; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Paul Schafer was preceded in death by his
16parents; his sister, Mary; and his brother-in-law, Doug; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Paul Schafer is survived by his wife, Katie
18Schafer; his children, Christopher (Ashley) Schafer, Patrick
19(Kaitlin) Schafer, Daniel Schafer (Emily Ackerman), and Molly
20Schafer; his grandchildren, Louise "Lou", Max, and Frankie
21Schafer; his sister, Kathy (Doug) Thomas; his brothers, Gerald
22(Brenda) Schafer and Tim Schafer; his uncle, Butch Schafer;
23and his several nieces, nephews, and cousins; therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
2ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
3Paul Francis Schafer and extend our sincere condolences to his
4family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
5further
 
6    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
7presented to the family of Paul Schafer as an expression of our
8deepest sympathy.
