SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened
3to learn of the death of Charles F. "Chuck" Flamini of
4Springfield, who passed away on April 21, 2021; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Chuck Flamini was born in Springfield to Oswald
6Flamini and Fern Sillman on June 12, 1946; he graduated from
7Lanphier High School and Eastern Illinois University; he
8returned to Springfield in 1968 and married Mary Macbeth in
9Las Vegas, Nevada in 1982; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Chuck Flamini began his career teaching at
11Lanphier High School; a 2005 State Journal-Register article
12recalled his sometimes unorthodox style of teaching, including
13the time he taught history backward, starting with the current
14year and working his way back in time; he served as president
15of the Springfield Education Association, representing the
16district's teachers and other employees; he was also an
17assistant basketball coach at Southeast High School, and he
18served as athletic director and principal at Lanphier; he was
19principal at Springfield High School when he retired in 2002,
20but he kept teaching, including a class titled Dealing with
21Diversity at the University of Illinois at Springfield, which
22dealt with racial, ethnic, gender, and sexual diversity; in
232005, he returned to the north end as director of Ursuline

1Academy and as curriculum coordinator for Springfield College
2in Illinois/Benedictine University, where he helped launch a
3new elementary education bachelor's degree program; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Chuck Flamini served as a school board member for
5District 186 until January 5, 2018; he was first elected in
62013 representing Subdistrict 7 and served as president; he
7took great pride in serving District 186 students, parents,
8and staff, and he continued to support the district in
9retirement; he encouraged and supported new school
10superintendents in their roles; he will be remembered as a
11respected teacher, union activist, school administrator, and
12school board member who touched many lives; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Chuck Flamini is survived by his wife, Mary; his
14daughters, Tonya (Brandon) Douglas and Beth Ray; his brother,
15Gary (Lisa) Flamini; his grandchildren, Annabella Dorrity, Ava
16and Aubree Douglas, Zachary (Michelle), and Phillip Ray; his
17great-grandchildren, Eliana and Carmela; and several nieces
18and nephews; therefore, be it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL
20ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
21Charles F. "Chuck" Flamini and extend our sincere condolences
22to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
23it further
