2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened | ||||||
3 | to learn of the death of Anne (Peterson) Johnston of | ||||||
4 | Champaign, who passed away on January 18, 2021; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Anne Johnston was born in Chicago to Faye and | ||||||
6 | Peter Peterson on August 7, 1921; she attended the University | ||||||
7 | of Illinois, where she studied floriculture and became a | ||||||
8 | sorority member of Alpha Omicron Pi; she married Seely | ||||||
9 | Johnston in 1971, and he preceded her in death in 2001; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, Anne Johnston was the proprietor of Campus | ||||||
11 | Florist in Champaign for 77 years; while a student at the | ||||||
12 | University of Illinois, she opened her shop on South Wright | ||||||
13 | Street in 1941; she later withdrew from school to concentrate | ||||||
14 | on her business; after a few months, she moved her business to | ||||||
15 | Green Street; she was the owner and operator of her business in | ||||||
16 | an era when there were not many women entrepreneurs, and she | ||||||
17 | helped to blaze that trail for the women who came behind her; | ||||||
18 | she closed the shop in October 2018; and
| ||||||
19 | WHEREAS, Anne Johnston was an active member in a number of | ||||||
20 | organizations, including the Champaign Exchange Club, Altrusa, | ||||||
21 | and the Republican party; she was the president and secretary | ||||||
22 | for the Campus Business Men's Association; she was a lifetime |

1 | member of the Illini Quarterback Club and the Rebounders; she | ||||||
2 | served as a superintendent and flower judge for the Champaign | ||||||
3 | County Fair for a few years; she was a member of the First | ||||||
4 | United Methodist Church; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Anne Johnston was known for her fun, independent, | ||||||
6 | civic-minded, and generous spirit; she donated flowers and | ||||||
7 | gave of her time to many area organizations; alongside her | ||||||
8 | husband, she enjoyed traveling; outside of work, she enjoyed | ||||||
9 | reading and listening to big band music; she loved flowers and | ||||||
10 | animals; she will be remembered for being a phenomenal woman | ||||||
11 | ahead of her time; and
| ||||||
12 | WHEREAS, Anne Johnston was preceded in death by her | ||||||
13 | parents and her husband; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, Anne Johnston is survived by her good friend, | ||||||
15 | Phyllis Valentine (Rob) and their extended family; her | ||||||
16 | stepdaughter, Jan Johnston Glick (Jim), and their children and | ||||||
17 | grandchildren, Scott, Steve, Wendi, Cody, Janlynn, Steven, | ||||||
18 | Bradley, and Mikhi; and her cat, Gracie; therefore, be it
| ||||||
19 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL | ||||||
20 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
21 | Anne (Peterson) Johnston and extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
22 | her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it |
