HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to honor the tenure of our esteemed
4colleague, Representative and Assistant Majority Leader Delia
5Ramirez, and thank her for her dedicated service to our State
6and to the people of Chicago; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Born in the Belmont Cragin community in Chicago,
8Leader Ramirez is the daughter of working-class Guatemalan
9immigrants; her mother crossed the border while pregnant to
10give her children new opportunities in the United States, and
11her family moved soon after to Humboldt Park; her parents
12worked multiple jobs to make ends meet and care for their
13children; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez's experiences in her younger years
15propelled her to a life of serving others; she earned her
16Bachelor of Arts in Justice Studies from Northeastern Illinois
17University; she has spent most of her professional life
18serving as a community organizer and social services director;
19she was the founding executive director of the Center for
20Changing Lives; she also worked in the nonprofit space for
21Common Cause and Community Renewal Society and was the board
22chair for the Latin United Community Housing Association
23(LUCHA) and the Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA);

1throughout her career, she has been dedicated to fighting for
2affordable housing, high-quality education, and expanding
3access to social services; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez ran for state representative of
5the 4th House District in 2018, becoming the first Guatemalan
6American elected to the Illinois General Assembly; and
 
7    WHEREAS, During her time as a state representative, Leader
8Ramirez's strong commitment to lifting working families and
9immigrant communities was clear as she developed a robust and
10progressive agenda to help the people of Chicago and the State
11of Illinois; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez has been a strong voice for
13high-quality public education, and she was a chief cosponsor
14for the law to create an elected school board in Chicago,
15therefore ensuring that Chicago families have a strong voice
16about the decisions made in their public schools; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez pushed to expand Medicaid coverage
18to older Illinoisans regardless of their immigration status,
19therefore reaffirming her commitment to lifting immigrant
20communities and ensuring that health care is equitable and
21affordable for all; and

1    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez has been committed to ensuring
2that housing is accessible and affordable for all and was
3integral in passing the emergency housing law to keep people
4housed during the COVID-19 pandemic; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez worked tirelessly in her district
6office to ensure her community had access to state and
7community information and resources by hosting numerous job
8fairs, food pantry collection drives, and healthcare
9enrollment workshops; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez ran for U.S. Congress in the
11Illinois 3rd District in 2022, making history as the first
12Illinois and Midwestern Latina elected to Congress; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Leader Ramirez has broken barriers for both women
14and the Latino community during her time in public service;
15all who had the honor to serve alongside her know that she will
16continue to use her passion and unwavering commitment to fight
17for the people of Illinois at the federal level; therefore, be
18it
 
19    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
20HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
21we congratulate Representative and Assistant Majority Leader
22Delia Ramirez on her retirement as a state representative,

2continued success in the future; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to Leader Ramirez as an expression of our respect
