HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Barbara
4Jean Tatum, who passed away on June 8, 2022; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum was born to Willie L. Lee Sr. and
6Vinney Gillespie Lee in Meridian, Mississippi on November 16,
71938; she attended Dunbar High School, Wilson Junior College,
8Roosevelt University, and Trinity College and Seminary; she
9married Reverend B.J. Tatum Sr.; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum worked as a legal secretary in the
11federal government and an administrative secretary to the
12former Mayor of Urbana; she served as the director of
13Christian Education and the administrative secretary at Canaan
14Baptist Church; she also wrote the weekly religious column
15Reflections in The Woodlawn Observer, a community-based
16newspaper; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum held a number of responsibilities
18in her role as director of Christian Education at Canaan
19Baptist Church; alongside her husband, she taught classes and
20seminars on relationships; she taught teacher training
21classes, training classes on discipleship follow-up for
22P.A.C.E. (People Available to Encourage), child evangelism, a

1Sunday school teacher's class on methods and relevancy, a
2discipleship class on interpersonal relationships, and a
3Sunday morning women's discipleship class; she conducted
4seminars and workshops for women on spiritual growth and faith
5education, and she addressed women's groups in various cities
6of the United States as well as in Athens and Crete, Greece;
7she and her husband were facilitators at marriage retreats at
8various churches throughout the United States, and they also
9attended a mission trip to Beijing and Hong Kong; she was also
10director of the Amazing Women Ministry, God's Gems Mosaic, and
11the Children's Ministry; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum served as president of the Women's
13Department of the Progressive Baptist District Association of
14Chicago and Vicinity; she served on the board of directors of
15the American Cancer Society, the Canaan Development
16Foundation, and the Canaan Credit Union; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum was preceded in death by her
18parents; her daughter, Pamela Jean Tatum; and her siblings,
19Willie L. Lee Jr., Rosie Mae Johnson, Nathan Henry Lee, John
20Arnold Lee, and Robert Earl Lee; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Barbara Tatum is survived by her husband; her
22daughters, Yolanda Tatum-Brown and Stephanie Lynne Tatum; her
23son, Bryant Jay (Jennifer) Tatum; her grandsons, Everett,

1Supreme, Bryson, Jordan, and Ishine; her sister, Beverly
2Moore; and a host of other relatives and special friends;
3therefore, be it
 
4    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
5HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
6we mourn the passing of Barbara Jean Tatum and extend our
7sincere condolences to her family, friends, and all who knew
8and loved her; and be it further
 
9    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10presented to the family of Barbara Tatum as an expression of
11our deepest sympathy.
