HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Aphasia is a communication impairment caused by
3brain damage, typically resulting from a stroke; and
 
4    WHEREAS, While aphasia is most often the result of stroke
5or brain injury, it can also occur in other neurological
6disorders, such as in the case of a brain tumor; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Many people with aphasia also have weakness or
8paralysis in their right leg and right arm, usually due to
9damage to the left hemisphere of the brain, which controls
10language and movement on the right side of the body; and
 
11    WHEREAS, The effects of aphasia may include a loss or
12reduction in the ability to speak, comprehend, read, and
13write, while intelligence remains intact; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Stroke is the third largest cause of death,
15ranking behind diseases of the heart and all forms of cancer;
16and
 
17    WHEREAS, Stroke is a leading cause of serious, long-term
18disability in the United States; and
 
19    WHEREAS, It is estimated that there are approximately

1795,000 strokes per year in the United States, with
2approximately one-third of these resulting in aphasia; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Aphasia affects at least 2,000,000 people in the
4United States; and
 
5    WHEREAS, More than 180,000 Americans acquire aphasia each
6year; and
 
7    WHEREAS, It is important to learn more about aphasia and
8to promote research, rehabilitation, and support services for
9people with aphasia and aphasia caregivers throughout
10Illinois; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we declare June of 2022 as Aphasia Awareness Month in the State
14of Illinois, and we encourage continuing research on aphasia
15and community support for those affected with the disease.
