HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Senior Pastor James and
4First Lady Corliss Moody on their retirement from serving as
5Senior Pastor and First Lady of the Quinn Chapel AME Church;
6and
 
7    WHEREAS, Quinn Chapel is the oldest African American
8Church in the City of Chicago; it was founded in 1844 and
9incorporated in 1847 which was just ten years after the
10incorporation of the City of Chicago; in 1891, it purchased
11the land at its current site at 2401 Wabash Ave, and a group of
12African Americans designed and built the church structure that
13stands today; and
 
14    WHEREAS, The Quinn Chapel AME church building was
15designated a Chicago Landmark in 1977 and added to the
16National Registry of Historic Places in 1979; and
 
17    WHEREAS, Quinn Chapel was instrumental in the founding of
18Provident Hospital and Elm House; historically, the church has
19been and continues to be an influential voice of empowerment
20and change in the City of Chicago; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Pastor Moody has been a pastor for 39 years; in

12002, he became Senior Pastor of Quinn Chapel African
2Methodist Episcopal Church, Chicago; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Along with Pastor Moody's many roles and
4responsibilities as Senior Pastor, he embarked on developing
5partnerships to restore the church structure befitting its
6historical prominence; he leaves a tireless legacy of
7restoration of lives and structures; he has been a community
8activist and a voice for those who had none, fighting for
9justice for all; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Pastor Moody has worked in the local community,
11the community at large, the City of Chicago, and beyond to
12fulfill the mission of the AME church which is "to minister to
13the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and
14environmental needs of all people"; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Pastor Moody has been a representative of the
16ongoing fight for civil rights and social justice in this
17country; he continues to uplift the underserved and to educate
18throughout all his endeavors by seeking out and saving the
19lost and serving the needy; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Because of Pastor Moody's commitment to service,
21he has opened the church doors to all that needed a helping
22hand; he is a man of distinction and honor and has given much

1of himself to lift the welfare of others; therefore, be it
 
2    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
3HUNDRED SECOND GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
4we wish to congratulate Senior Pastor James and First Lady
5Corliss Moody on their retirement from serving as Senior
6Pastor and First Lady of the Quinn Chapel AME Church and wish
7them luck in all their future endeavors; and be it further
 
8    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be sent
9to Pastor James and First Lady Corliss Moody and the Quinn
10Chapel AME Church as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
