105 ILCS 5/34-18.67 new

    Amends the School Code. Requires a school district to offer a program to prepare students enrolled in grades 6 through 12 for a career and technical education pathway by introducing students to career exploration opportunities that allow students to explore a wide variety of high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand career fields. Sets forth what a school district shall provide in its career and technical education pathway program. Provides for rulemaking. Effective immediately.

1    AN ACT concerning education.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Sections
510-20.73 and 34-18.67 as follows:
 
6    (105 ILCS 5/10-20.73 new)
7    Sec. 10-20.73. Career and education pathway program.
8    (a) A school district that enrolls students in any of
9grades 6 through 12 shall offer a program to prepare students
10enrolled in grades 6 through 12 for a career and technical
11education pathway by introducing students to career
12exploration opportunities that allow students to explore a
13wide variety of high-skill, high-wage, or in-demand career
14fields.
15    (b) A school district shall provide in its career and
16technical education pathway program both of the following:
17        (1) Career exploration and career development
18    activities through an organized, systematic framework that
19    is designed to aid students enrolled in grades 6 through
20    12 to make informed plans and decisions about their future
21    education, career opportunities, and programs of study
22    while participating in a career and technical education
23    program. The career exploration and career development

1    activities may include the following:
2            (A) introductory courses or activities that are
3        focused on career exploration and career awareness,
4        including the exploration of nontraditional careers or
5        fields;
6            (B) readily available career and labor market
7        information, including information on:
8                (i) occupational supply and demand;
9                (ii) educational requirements;
10                (iii) careers aligned to State or local
11            priorities, as appropriate; and
12                (iv) employment sectors;
13            (C) programs and activities related to the
14        development of student graduation and career plans;
15            (D) career guidance counselors and academic
16        counselors who provide information on postsecondary
17        education and career options;
18            (E) any other activity that advances student
19        knowledge of career opportunities and assists students
20        in making informed decisions about their future
21        education and employment goals, including
22        nontraditional careers or fields; or
23            (F) providing students with a strong experience in
24        an industry that allows the student to gain a
25        comprehensive understanding of all aspects of that
26        industry.

1        (2) Professional development opportunities for
2    teachers related to career and technical education for
3    students enrolled in grades 6 through 12.
4    (c) The State Board of Education may adopt any rules
5necessary to implement this Section.

3    Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon
4becoming law.
