SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Specialist Henry Jarrett "Mitch" Mayfield Jr.
3bravely served our country in the United States Army,
4selflessly dedicating his time on earth to protecting our lives
5and keeping our families safe; and
 
6    WHEREAS, SPC Mayfield, age 23, of Hazel Crest was killed in
7action on January 5, 2020 from injuries sustained during a
8terror attack on the Manda Bay Airfield in Kenya; and
 
9    WHEREAS, After attending Northern Illinois University, SPC
10Mayfield enlisted in the Army; he joined the U.S. Army on
11August 21, 2017 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 58th
12Aviation Regiment, 164th Theater Airfield Operations Group,
13Fort Rucker, Alabama; and
 
14    WHEREAS, SPC Mayfield was described by the commander of Air
15Traffic Services Command as an individual who inspired those
16with whom he served to excel both on and off duty; he received
17numerous awards and commendations, including the Bronze Star
18Medal (posthumous), the Purple Heart, (posthumous), the Army
19Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the
20Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on
21Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas
22Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge (posthumous), the

1Combat and Special Skill Basic Marksmanship Qualification
2Badge, the Weapon Bar: Rifle, the Sharpshooter Bar, and the
3Overseas Service Bar; and
 
4    WHEREAS, SPC Mayfield graduated from Hillcrest High School
5in Country Club Hills, where he enjoyed playing sports,
6especially basketball, and spending time with family; and
 
7    WHEREAS, SPC Mayfield is survived by his father and
8stepmother, Henry J. Mayfield Sr. and Carmoneta
9Horton-Mayfield, and eight siblings; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Specialist Henry Jarrett "Mitch" Mayfield Jr. and extend our
13sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all who knew
14and loved him; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of SPC Mayfield as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
