SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Arnold W. "Arnie" Schlegel of Waukegan;
4and
 
5    WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel was born in Racine, Wisconsin to
6Lorenz and Meta (Strey) on November 2, 1924; he was baptized
7and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church and graduated from
8Horlick High School in Racine in 1942; he served his country in
9the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 as Staff Sergeant, Company K,
1071st Infantry, 44th Division; he received a Combat Infantry
11Badge and a European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal with
12one Bronze Star; he married Verna Kump at St. Paul's Lutheran
13Church in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin in 1951; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel received his Master of Science from
15the University of Wisconsin; he taught business education
16studies and economics for two years in Brooklyn, Wisconsin and
17in Lafayette, Indiana; he then served as an educator at
18Waukegan High School from 1959 to 1992, where he co-created the
19computer programing curriculum; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel enjoyed traveling through Europe;
21he played the West Campus organ for the travelogue pictures for
2225 years and was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he

1served as Sunday school teacher, stewardship chairman,
2treasurer, and choir member; he rebuilt an old church organ,
3grew flowers from seeds, and constructed a rock garden and pond
4for the yard; he collected replicas of ships, music boxes, and
5steins; he loved music and could play many instruments in his
6early years; he entertained others with German folk songs and
7puns; he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel was preceded in death by his
9parents and his sons-in-law, Richard Neil and Lawrence Tessmer;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, Arnie Schlegel is survived by his wife of 68
12years, Verna; his daughters, Kimberly and Laurie; his
13grandsons, Richard, William (Kelly), and Gregory (Brandy); his
14step-great-grandson, Johnaton, and one on the way; and his
15sister-in-law, Carrie Viola (Bill); therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL
17ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
18Arnold W. "Arnie" Schlegel and extend our sincere condolences
19to his family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be
20it further
 
21    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
22presented to the family of Arnie Schlegel as an expression of
