2    WHEREAS, Burn injuries continue to be one of the leading

4tragically, children, the elderly, and the disabled are
5especially vulnerable to burn injuries, and almost one-third of
6all burn injuries occur in children under the age of 15; and

7    WHEREAS, Annually, in the United States, approximately
8486,000 people receive medical care for treatment of burn
9injuries; in 2016 alone, there were 3,280 deaths from fire and
10smoke inhalation, and another 40,000 people were treated in
11hospitals for burn related injuries; and

12    WHEREAS, Children under five are 2.4 times as likely as the
13general population to suffer burn injuries that require
14emergency medical treatment, and young adults ages 20-29 have a
15probability of burn injury that is roughly 1.5 times the risk
16of the general population; and

17    WHEREAS, The primary causes of injury include fire-flame,
18scalds, electrical, and chemicals; most of the injuries occur

6injuries, and to detail how to best care for those that are
7injured; and

8    WHEREAS, Significant research and medical advances have
9dramatically improved burn care and treatment, aided
10rehabilitation, shortened hospital stays, and increased burn

14communities; furthermore, burn safety education and prevention
15efforts continue to reduce the number of people who suffer
16burns each year; and

17    WHEREAS, Many people devote their lives and careers to
18treating, caring for, supporting, and rehabilitating burn
19injury survivors, including those performing vital work in burn
