HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate Enoch "Nick" Scull Jr. on
4being awarded the French Legion of Honor, the highest award
5given by the French government, on October 24, 2019 for his
6role in liberating France during World War II; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Nick Scull was raised on a farm in the Plano area
8and graduated from Plano High School, where he excelled in
9sports; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Nick Scull entered active service in the United
11States Armed Forces at Camp Grant on April 3, 1943; he began
12serving as a combat engineer with Company B of the 103rd
13Engineer Battalion, 28th Infantry Division; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Nick Scull was deployed to Europe a few months
15prior to his participation in D-Day and the invasions of
16Normandy, northern France, the Ardennes, and the Rhineland
17between January 1944 and April 1945; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Nick Scull was captured by the Germans during the
19Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and survived 103 days in
20German prison camps before being liberated by General Patton's
21Army on March 30, 1945; and

1    WHEREAS, Nick Scull was discharged from the United States
2Army on November 1, 1945 at Fort Sheridan; and
 
3    WHEREAS, For his service, Nick Scull earned the
4European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with four
5Bronze Battle Stars, two Overseas Service Bars, the Good
6Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theater
7Ribbon, two Purple Hearts, the P.O.W. Medal, and the
8Presidential Unit Citation for heroism; and
 
9    WHEREAS, After returning from the war, Nick Scull lived a
10happy and successful life, raising five children with his wife,
11Patricia, playing a year of minor league baseball with the
12Tampa Bay Smokers, running a barber shop, and working as a
13foreman at Plano Metal Specialties Inc.; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
15HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
16we congratulate Enoch "Nick" Scull Jr. on being awarded the
17French Legion of Honor and recognize his service to the United
18States; and be it further
 
19    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
20presented to Nick Scull and American Legion Post 395 in Plano.
