HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, Governors State University was established on
3July 17, 1969 by Governor Richard B. Ogilvie as a bold, new
4model for transforming lives through education in Chicago's
5South Suburbs; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Governors State University was initially known as
7the "university without walls" to reflect its unlimited
8potential and to commemorate opening the same week the United
9States sent Apollo 11 to the moon; and
 
10    WHEREAS, Over two decades, Governors State University
11transformed itself into a university with classrooms,
12structured programs, and letter grades while staying true to
13its version of serving nontraditional students; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Governors State University has since created a
15national model for serving adults and returning adults whose
16contributions as graduates and working professionals stimulate
17local, regional, and global communities; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Between 2011 and 2014, Governors State University
19reinvented itself once again with the creation of an
20award-winning, structured, four-year undergraduate program,
21the admittance of freshmen, the development of the Dual Degree

1Program (DDP), a nationally-recognized partnership with 17
2Chicagoland community colleges, the building of the
3University's first living-learning community, Prairie Place,
4and the addition of NAIA intercollegiate athletics; and
 
5    WHEREAS, As the only public university in the area south of
6Chicago, Governors State University is an educational and
7cultural destination and serves nearly 5,000 undergraduate and
8graduate students who reflect the nation's new student
9majority, first-generation students, students of color,
10adults, and military veterans; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDRED FIRST GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that
13we declare July 17, 2019 as Governors State University Day in
14the State of Illinois and commend the University on 50 years of
15leadership, innovation, education, and excellence in the
16Chicagoland region, the nation, and the world; and be it
17further
 
18    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
19presented to Governors State University as an expression of our
20esteem and respect.
