1    AN ACT concerning local government.
 
2    Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3represented in the General Assembly:
 
4    Section 5. The Counties Code is amended by changing Section
54-7001 as follows:
 
6    (55 ILCS 5/4-7001)  (from Ch. 34, par. 4-7001)
7    Sec. 4-7001. Coroner's fees. The fees of the coroner's
8office shall be as follows:
9        1. For a copy of a transcript of sworn testimony: $5.00
10    per page.
11        2. For a copy of an autopsy report (if not included in
12    transcript): $50.00.
13        3. For a copy of the verdict of a coroner's jury:
14    $5.00.
15        4. For a copy of a toxicology report: $25.00.
16        5. For a print of or an electronic file containing a
17    picture obtained by the coroner: actual cost or $3.00,
18    whichever is greater.
19        6. For each copy of miscellaneous reports, including
20    artist's drawings but not including police reports: actual
21    cost or $25.00, whichever is greater.
22        7. For a coroner's or medical examiner's permit to
23    cremate a dead human body: $100.00 $50.00. The coroner may

1    waive, at his or her discretion, the permit fee if the
2    coroner determines that the person is indigent and unable
3    to pay the permit fee or under other special circumstances.
4        8. For a certified copy of a transcript of sworn
5    testimony of a coroner's inquest made by written request
6    declaring the request is for research or genealogy
7    purposes: $15.00 for the entire transcript. A request shall
8    be deemed a proper request for purpose of research or
9    genealogy if the requested inquest occurred not less than
10    20 years prior to the date of the written request. The
11    transcript shall be stamped with the words "FOR GENEALOGY
12    OR RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY".
13    The coroner may waive, at his or her discretion, fees under
14this Section if the coroner determines that the person is
15indigent and unable to pay the permit fee or under other
16special circumstances as determined by the coroner.
17    All of which fees shall be certified by the court; in the
18case of inmates of any State charitable or penal institution,
19the fees shall be paid by the operating department or
20commission, out of the State Treasury. The coroner shall file
21his or her claim in probate for his or her fees and he or she
22shall render assistance to the State's attorney in the
23collection of such fees out of the estate of the deceased. In
24counties of less than 1,000,000 population, the State's
25attorney shall collect such fees out of the estate of the
26deceased.

1    Except as otherwise provided in this Section, whenever the
2coroner is required by law to perform any of the duties of the
3office of the sheriff, the coroner is entitled to the like fees
4and compensation as are allowed by law to the sheriff for the
5performance of similar services.
6    Except as otherwise provided in this Section, whenever the
7coroner of any county is required to travel in the performance
8of his or her duties, he or she shall receive the same mileage
9fees as are authorized for the sheriff of such county.
10    All fees under this Section collected by or on behalf of
11the coroner's office shall be paid over to the county treasurer
12and deposited into a special account in the county treasury.
13Moneys in the special account shall be used solely for the
14purchase of electronic and forensic identification equipment
15or other related supplies and the operating expenses of the
16coroner's office.
