Amends the Downstate Firefighter Article of the Illinois Pension Code. Authorizes a board of trustees to designate a firefighter as a hero for work performed in connection with his or her service as a firefighter. Effective immediately.

| 2 | | Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,

| 3 | | represented in the General Assembly:

| 4 | | Section 5. The Illinois Pension Code is amended by adding |
| 5 | | Section 4-125.5 as follows:
|
| 6 | | (40 ILCS 5/4-125.5 new) |
| 7 | | Sec. 4-125.5. To designate a firefighter as a hero. To |
| 8 | | designate a firefighter as a hero for work performed in |
| 9 | | connection with his or her service as a firefighter.

| 10 | | Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |
| 11 | | becoming law.
