SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Dawn Elaine Miller of Mundelein, who
4passed away on May 18, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller was born in Chicago to John and
6Gwendolyn Schey on February 6, 1942; she earned a degree in
7gemology from Boston University; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller and her husband, Marvin, owned and
9operated bakeries in Mundelein (Miller's), Lindenhurst
10(Countryside), and Round Lake (Joseph's); she also worked for
11Rogers and Holland Jewelers; and
 
12    WHEREAS, For over 42 years, Dawn Miller was a passionate
13leader for public education; she served Diamond Lake District
1476 as a school board member and parent from 1973 to 1984; she
15spent nine years on the Mundelein High School District 120
16board, four years as president, and would hand out a dollar
17bill as she congratulated each graduate noting, "This is the
18first dollar your high school graduation has earned you."; from
191990 to 1992, she served as vice president of the Illinois
20Association of School Boards; in 1992, she became a field
21service director and later director of executive searches for
22the Illinois Association of School Boards, where she served for

121 years; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller also served on task forces and special
3commissions for the National Association of School Boards and
4the U.S. Department of Education; she was a frequent presenter
5at numerous national and state school board and school
6administrator conferences; her children established the Dawn
7E. Miller Spirit of Education Foundation, which annually
8presents a scholarship to an Elementary District 76 graduate
9and Mundelein High School graduate who embodies Dawn's spirit
10of service and lifelong dedication to education and its ability
11to enrich communities; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller served as a Lake County Republican
13precinct committeeman and Lake County chairwoman; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller loved precious stones, including the
15numerous stones she obtained during her 25th anniversary cruise
16with Marvin to South America; she loved all things Disney World
17and her beloved Great Danes, and for over 25 years she bred and
18showed many champion Great Danes; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller supported the downtown business
20community's Gypsy Days, Jaycees Chicken Dinners, and Mundelein
21Junior Football as a cheerleading coach; she enjoyed her life
22as a snowbird and loved her hideaway community home in Ft.

1Myers, Florida, especially Merion Village and its Thursday
2night patio events and Monday night bingo and trivia; and
 
3    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller was preceded in death by her husband,
4Marvin; her daughter, Laura Joy; her sister, Debra Oliva; and
5her brother, Scott Schey; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dawn Miller is survived by her children, Marvin
7(Karen), Geoffrey (Sharon), Melody Miller Clegg (Dan), Valery
8Gallagher (Peter), Heather Miller Brown, and Dr. April Miller;
9her grandchildren, Stephanie, Alison (David Jarquin), Geoffrey
10Jr., Steven, Addison, Clark, Arthur, "her little buddy" Owen,
11Patrick, and Brendan; her great-grandchildren, Nathaniel and
12Alex; her sister, Jacqueline Goczeski; her brother, John
13(Deborah) Schey; and many nieces and nephews; therefore, be it
 
14    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
15ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
16Dawn Elaine Miller, and extend our sincere condolences to her
17family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it
18further
 
19    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
20presented to the family of Dawn Miller as an expression of our
21deepest sympathy.
