SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Peter H. Huizenga of Oak Brook, who
4passed away on May 2, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was born in a Dutch community
6outside of Chicago to a family of garbage haulers in 1939; he
7learned the value of hard work and the power of friendship,
8faith, and determination early on, as he worked on a garbage
9truck from 2 a.m. until noon every day each summer; he
10graduated from Hope College and then served as a Captain in the
11United States Army Reserve; he then attended law school at the
12University of Illinois; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga practiced law at the firm of
14Hlustik, Huizenga, Williams and VanderWoude; in 1968, he joined
15his family's garbage business, which became Waste Management
16Inc., a Fortune 500 company; he held various roles at Waste
17Management, including Director for 30 years and various office
18roles; he helped take the company public in 1972, and Waste
19Management was the largest waste disposal company in the world;
20after helping build Waste Management, he managed finances for
21his family as well as other clients as Chairman of Huizenga
22Capitol Management, an investment advisory firm; he was an
23early investor in many businesses, including Blockbuster

2    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was a philanthropist and actively
3supported many organizations, including the Big Shoulders
4Fund, Timothy Christian Schools, Christ Church of Oak Brook,
5Trinity Christian College, Elim Christian Services, Hope
6College, the Boy Scouts of America, and many other
7organizations; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga made a difference in people's lives
9through philanthropy and business pursuits; relationships and
10helping others were at the core of who he was as a person and as
11a businessman; these values were a source of pride for him and
12his family, whom he loved dearly; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Peter Huizenga was the loving husband of 50 years
14of Heidi; the father of Betsy (Dave) Bradley, Greta Huizenga,
15Peter Jr. (Abby) Huizenga, and Tim Huizenga; the grandfather of
16Elizabeth, Matthew, William, and Michael Bradley, Soleil and
17Noah Huizenga Giesen, and Hally, Hope, Peter III "Tripp" and
18Hannah Huizenga; and the brother of Sue Kanis, Virginia
19"Ginger" Jurries, John Charles "J.C." Huizenga, and the late
20Elizabeth "B.J." Buntrock; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
22ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of

1Peter H. Huizenga and extend our sincere condolences to his
2family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
3further
 
4    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
5presented to the family of Peter H. Huizenga as an expression
6of our deepest sympathy.
