SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3learn of the death of Paul Everett Smith of Urbana, who passed
4away on February 4, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Paul Smith was born in Roodhouse to Carrie
6(McGhehey) and William Oscar Smith on May 7, 1921; he attended
7Roodhouse schools and was baptized in the Illinois River at
8Hillview in 1937; he served his country following World War II
9in the Merchant Marines, taking thousands of horses to a
10devastated Europe; he attended Shurtleff College in Alton and
11received a bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois in
12science education in 1948 and a master's degree in 1950; he
13married Ruth E. Sprankel on December 24, 1950; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Paul Smith taught physics and chemistry at Urbana
15High School from 1948 until 1970; he was a member of the
16Illinois Physics Teachers Association, the Illinois Chemistry
17Teachers Association, and the National Physics and Chemistry
18Association; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Paul Smith and his wife founded an apartment
20rental business in Champaign-Urbana in 1958, which still
21operates today; he was a founding member of the Central
22Illinois Apartment Association; and

1    WHEREAS, Paul Smith was an active member of Twin City Bible
2Church for over 50 years; he enjoyed working, reading the
3Bible, helping others, and being with his family; and
 
4    WHEREAS, Paul Smith was preceded in death by his wife,
5Ruth; his parents; three brothers; and one sister; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Paul Smith is survived by his daughters, Christine
7Gunther (Jim) and Karen Colvill (Jeff); his grandchildren,
8Steve Colvill (Olivia), Jenny Colvill, and Jamie Gunther; and
9his brother, Philip Smith; therefore, be it
 
10    RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH GENERAL
11ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of
12Paul Everett Smith, and extend our sincere condolences to his
13family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it
14further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to the family of Paul Smith as an expression of our
17deepest sympathy.
