HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate the schoolchildren of
4Sangamon County on raising over $18,000 worth of pennies and
5spare change over a period of two weeks in order to purchase
6the Minute Book of Sangamon County; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The penny drive was modeled after a similar
8campaign from the early 1940s, when Illinois State Historical
9Library Trustee Oliver Barrett asked schoolchildren from
10around the state to raise money to buy the "Everett Copy," a
11copy of the Gettysburg Address written by Abraham Lincoln
12himself; the campaign was extremely successful and raised
13$50,000; the Everett Copy now resides at the Abraham Lincoln
14Presidential Library and Museum; and
 
15    WHEREAS, As part of the Illinois Bicentennial, Sangamon
16County schoolchildren were encouraged to donate pennies and
17spare change as part of the "Illinois Proud Penny Drive"
18campaign, which ran for two weeks from April 16, 2018 until
19April 27, 2018, with a goal of $15,000; that goal was
20surpassed, and $18,031 was raised; and
 
21    WHEREAS, Proceeds from the Illinois Proud Penny drive will
22be used to buy the Minute Book of the Sangamon County Circuit

1Court from July 6, 1835 to July 7, 1838, which contains a
2certification that formally admitted Abraham Lincoln to the
3Illinois Bar and attested to his "good moral character"; in
4addition, the book contains records of some of the earliest
5cases with which Abraham Lincoln and his law partner, John Todd
6Stuart, were involved; and
 
7    WHEREAS, The penny drive was a true community effort,
8involving not only children from more than 60 Sangamon County
9schools, but also contributors such as the Sangamon County Bar
10Association and Staab Funeral Homes, as well as partners
11including the Bank of Springfield, Pease's at Bunn Gourmet,
12Midwest Family Broadcasting, Looking for Lincoln, Springfield
13Pepsi Bottling Company, Giganti & Giganti, Staff Carpet,
14Midwest Office Supply, and the Illinois Bicentennial
15Commission; and
 
16    WHEREAS, Because of the efforts of these community partners
17and the schoolchildren of Sangamon County, the Minute Book of
18Sangamon County will be brought back to Mr. Lincoln's hometown
19and displayed in the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum for
20visitors to admire; therefore, be it
 
21    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
22HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
23congratulate the children of Sangamon County on their efforts

1to bring this historic Lincoln artifact back to his hometown,
2and we admire their hard work and dedication, as well as that
3of the community, to make a meaningful impact out of spare
4change; and be it further
 
5    RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
