HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the passing of
4Southern Illinois University Carbondale Chancellor Dr. Carlo
5Montemagno, who passed away on October 11, 2018; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno received his bachelor's degree in
7agricultural and biological engineering from Cornell
8University, his master's degree in petroleum and natural gas
9engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and his
10doctoral degree in civil engineering and geological sciences
11from the University of Notre Dame; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as a United States Naval
13Officer for the United States Department of Energy for nine
14years; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was named a fellow for the American
16Institute for Medical and Biomedical Engineering, the American
17Academy for Nanomedicine, and the NASA Institute for Advanced
18Concepts; and
 
19    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was widely published, served on the
20editorial boards of multiple academic journals, and was a
21sought-after speaker on nanotechnology; and

1    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno received numerous awards for his
2scientific work, including the Feynman Prize for Experimental
3Work in Nanotechnology, the Earth Award Grand Prize, and the
4CNBC Business Top Ten Green Innovator award; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was named a Bill & Melinda Gates
6Grand Challenge winner for his development of an oral vaccine
7delivery system that increased vaccine stability; and
 
8    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as director of the
9biomedical engineering graduate program and associate
10professor at Cornell University and group leader in the
11environmental research division at Argonne National
12Laboratories at the University of Chicago; and
 
13    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as a professor of mechanical
14and aerospace engineering, founding chair of the Department of
15Bioengineering, and co-director of the NASA Center for Cell
16Mimetic Space Exploration at the University of California, Los
17Angeles; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was the founding dean of the
19College of Engineering and Applied Sciences and a professor of
20bioengineering at the University of Cincinnati; and

1    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno was an internationally recognized
2expert in nanotechnology and biomedical engineering and
3focused his work on linking multiple disciplines to solve
4problems in areas of health, energy, and the environment; and
 
5    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno founded the interdisciplinary
6Ingenuity Lab based at the University of Alberta in Canada; and
 
7    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno served as director of the
8biomaterials program for the Canadian Research Council's
9National Institute for Nanotechnology and research chair in
10intelligent nanosystems for the Canadian National Research
11Council; and
 
12    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno became Chancellor of SIU
13Carbondale on August 15, 2017; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Dr. Montemagno is survived by his wife, Pamela;
15two children; and five grandchildren; therefore, be it
 
16    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
17HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
18mourn, along with his family and friends, the passing of Dr.
19Carlo Montemagno; and be it further
 
20    RESOLVED, That we honor the memory of Dr. Montemagno and

1his dedication to the advancement of medicine and the students
2of SIU Carbondale; and be it further
 
3    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
4presented to the family of Dr. Montemagno as a symbol of our
5sincere sympathy and in honor of his achievements.
