HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate CP Crawford on the
4occasion of his 111th birthday on August 25, 2018; and
 
5    WHEREAS, CP Crawford was born in Jackson, Mississippi to
6John and Mattie Crawford on August 25, 1907; his mother passed
7away when he was an infant, and his father struggled with
8raising six children while also working in the fields; he and
9his siblings were all separated and raised by aunts and uncles;
10and
 
11    WHEREAS, CP Crawford began working in the fields at the age
12of four and was not allowed to attend school; he spent his days
13picking cotton, plowing fields for corn, and maintaining the
14gardens until the age of 12; when he was 13, he was offered a
15job washing dishes at a cafe; later in life, he worked at the
16Southland Oil Refinery in Mississippi and the Illinois Central
17Railroad, which brought him to Chicago; after more than 11
18years working for the railroad, he retired; and
 
19    WHEREAS, During his life, CP Crawford was married three
20times; although he had two biological children, he was a father
21to six; and

1    WHEREAS, In November of 2015, with the help of the staff
2and students of Thornton Fractional South High School and the
3Activity Director at the Tri-State Nursing and Rehabilitation
4Center, CP Crawford was issued an honorary high school diploma,
5complete with a ceremony attended by students, faculty, staff,
6and administrators from both the high school and Tri-State, as
7well as village officials; and
 
8    WHEREAS, CP Crawford has always been known as a loving and
9caring man who would give his last if it would help someone in
10need; therefore, be it
 
11    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
12HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
13congratulate CP Crawford on his 111th birthday on August 25,
142018; and be it further
 
15    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
16presented to CP Crawford as an expression of our esteem and
17respect.
