HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives wish to congratulate William "Bill" Yoshino on
438 years of service as the Midwest Regional Director of the
5Japanese American Citizens League (JACL), a position he
6accepted in 1978; and
 
7    WHEREAS, In his work with the JACL, Bill assisted in
8organizing outreach to the members of Congress in the Midwest
9for legislation to establish the Commission on Wartime
10Relocation and Internment of Civilians, as well as for the
11Civil Liberties Act of 1988; and
 
12    WHEREAS, In the 1990s, Bill worked with the Office of
13Redress Administration to assist in contacting individuals who
14were eligible to receive redress payments; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Bill is a respected leader in JACL's effort to
16combat anti-Asian sentiment through stronger hate crime
17legislation and anti-defamation initiatives; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Bill testified before the United States Senate on
19the Hate Crimes Statistics Act of 1988, has produced a
20semi-annual newsletter on hate crimes and hate incidents, and
21has conducted hate crime workshops at college conferences; and

1    WHEREAS, Bill has represented the Asian American community
2on the Illinois Asian American Advisory Council to the
3Governor, the Chicago Asian American Advisory Committee, the
4Chicago Commission on Human Relations, and the Illinois
5Commission on Discrimination and Hate Crimes; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Bill supported the growth of young leaders by
7organizing teacher training workshops through grants from the
8National Park Service and the National Endowment for the
9Humanities, revising and updating the JACL curriculum guide,
10and producing educational materials on Japanese American
11internment and Asian Pacific Islander history; he also
12established the JACL Collegiate Washington, D.C. Leadership
13Program and has provided fellowship opportunities to college
14graduates; and
 
15    WHEREAS, Bill has ensured the continued success of the
16Japanese American Citizens League through his dedicated work to
17develop young leaders; and
 
18    WHEREAS, Bill's commitment to honor and address history and
19his work to educate the public on hate crimes to prevent future
20injustices has made a major impact on generations of citizens;
21therefore, be it

1    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
2HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
3congratulate William "Bill" Yoshino on 38 years of service as
4the Midwest Regional Director of the Japanese American Citizens
5League, and we wish him the best in all of his future
6endeavors; and be it further
 
7    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
8presented to William Yoshino as an expression of our esteem and
9respect.
