HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Officer
4Stevenson "Steve" Jones of Elgin, who passed away on May 6,
52017 at the age of 59; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Officer Jones was a veteran of the Elgin Police
7Department and a school resource officer at Kimball Middle
8School; he worked for 28 years making Elgin a better place to
9live; he was well known throughout Elgin, where he spent his
10entire career after being hired in 1989; and
 
11    WHEREAS, Officer Jones worked patrol for many years and was
12a member of the department's drug unit and the
13multijurisdictional North Central Narcotics Task Force; and
 
14    WHEREAS, Officer Jones ran a mentoring program for kids,
15connecting them with people he knew in the community; he helped
16organize the "community conversations" series held between
17police and residents at Second Baptist Church of Elgin; he was
18active with the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement
19Executives; and
 
20    WHEREAS, Officer Jones earned 16 letters of appreciation, a
21department commendation in 1995, and distinguished service

1awards in 2010 and 2015; and
 
2    WHEREAS, Officer Jones enjoyed sports and was a fan of the
3Chicago Bulls; he recently organized a visit at Kimball Middle
4School by Jarrett Payton, son of the late Walter Payton, the
5former Chicago Bears running back; and
 
6    WHEREAS, Officer Jones became very popular among the
7students and staff at Kimball Middle School in Elgin; many of
8the students described him as amazing, legendary, and some even
9said he was a father figure to them; he was very approachable
10and took many of the younger officers under his wing sharing
11many of his life experience; therefore, be it
 
12    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE
13HUNDREDTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
14mourn the passing of Officer Stevenson "Steve" Jones, and
15extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and all
16who knew and loved him; and be it further
 
17    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
18presented to the family of Officer Jones as an expression of
19our deepest sympathy.
